Neither will lose weight but Pilates will sort out your core strength.

Pilates and yoga are quite similar in the poses they use, yoga is more spiritual though. You pair the poses with you breathing and it’s meant to help ‘re-align’ the body as a whole.
Pilates is much newer and more about fitness and strength.
I’d say it depends what you want to get from it. Yoga is better for anxiety and relaxation.
Hope that helps Smile

Oh pilates most definitely! Try to find one that's physio led. Pilates fixes me. Yoga breaks me, ask the stretching hamstrings actually gives me sciatica!

Done both, yoga is a fab all-rounder and helps with the clear mind too. You don't have to actually get any better at it to reap the benefits so there is zero pressure.
Pilates is fab if you have ore existing injuries or niggles, or do no other exercise/limited walking as really helps strengthen those under unitised muscles.

Pilates is much better with an instructor face to face as the alignment is really subtle, yoga can be done online or in person.

Personally I prefer yoga and felt the most benefit from this. Started plates to supliment my physiotherapy after a bad knee injury and helped but didn't relax and 'ground' me for want of a better word.

I’m not sure I’d describe Pilates as ‘new’ given it’s about 100years old. It’ll definitely help you feel stronger and taller. Would always recommend Pilates first

Christ the spelling in that is awful, not even going to try to correct as autocorrect is clearly against me Blush

I actually find them very different, my family have a yoga studio and I practiced daily for 5 years. For me yoga is more of a fully body experience, breath to movement, it's big expansive movements (unless you're doing yin). I really don't think about anything else on the mat. The mental relaxation is immense.

I've been doing pilates for 2 years 1:1 with an instructor as part of a physio plan. Pilates is small, controlled, contained movements where you concentrate a lot on specific parts of your body moving or crucially not moving. If you're looking for brute core strength pilates is the best but you need to practice good technique, it's easy for your body to cheat such as bending from the knee in toe taps rather than the hip which engages lower abdominals. I don't get the same de-stressing from pilates it's more like a traditional workout.

Just my experiences! Can you do both?

What classes are available that fit in with everything else you do? That's probably how I would decide!

BogRollBOGOF · 30/08/2021 21:10

I favour the flow from yoga and find it more mentally rewarding.

Pilates was created as physical rehab for dancers. Some favour that more direct approach.

Thanks everyone . I might try both. It will have to be online for now as have no spare time to go do something so it will be when I can after wirk/ after kids in bed.
