Flower remedies - anything in it or snake oil?

So I seem to spend quite a lot of time feeling like crap... low mood, anxious, low energy... etc etc.

There's a load of reasons - work is crazy-stressful, usually work 65-70 hours per week, COVID wiped me out, perimenopausal... you've seen this film before 😉

I saw an ad for blended flower remedies (a bit like the Bach ones but a different company) and wondered whether anyone had any positive stories of using these?

Disclaimer: I am typically the very least woo person ever and don't go in for all the natural remedy stuff but I'm trying to be open minded.

If you don't believe it won't work, surely? And you don't, do you!

I think that's what I'm wondering really.

The FAQ on the website I was reading referred to the essences being made from the 'plant's vibrations', which I must admit I found it difficult to wrap my head around.

On the one hand, I strongly suspect that they have a placebo effect on people who are into that sort of thing.

Conversely, there are substances that have an effect irrespective of whether you 'believe in' them or, indeed, are even aware you are consuming them. Imagine I didn't believe in say... calcium. Even though I thought calcium was a load of old nonsense, it would still be working away, giving me strong teeth and bones.

Or imagine if I didn't know anything about calcium and wasn't aware it was even contained in all the milk I'm knocking back. It would still be working, though.

So what I'm wondering is whether this sort of natural remedy is just snake oil and woo or whether it really does have any sort of positive effect on the cynical.

It's woo but... placebo effect can be pretty strong and sometimes is enough to get you through. My SIL swears by Rescue Remedy and it really does seem to help her. I think it's not the Remedy but the act of physically removing herself from whatever stress she is experiencing and having a moment to breathe that works but if she believes it's the remedy who am I to take that away from her?

Someone gave me some Bach rescue remedy before my professional exams, years ago. I looked at the ingredients and it’s pretty much a small vial of strong brandy into which some leaves were dipped for a couple of seconds.

It is, of course, complete bollocks. Plant vibrations???

GinIronic · 31/08/2021 16:55

It’s snake oil. A flower tincture won’t help you. Your lifestyle needs to change - as you say - low energy and work crazy stressful.

Quick slug of brandy without the plant vibrations does it for me tbh

I don’t know but am sceptical. However they’ll never replace less hours and HRT!

I bought the rescue remedy many years ago and it made me irritable rather than the calming effect I had hoped for!

PallasStrand · 31/08/2021 17:44

Snake oil. My otherwise delightful and intelligent friend who swears by it also takes her dogs to a ‘homeopathic vet’. (No, me neither.)

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 31/08/2021 17:45

It's wildly overpriced brandy Grin
