When do you let children decide whats on?

By the above I mean use the remote themselves.

My DD is 7, can’t read and mixes numbers up. So I’ve always recorded programmes and then put them on for her. She chooses what it is by telling me and if there’s something she mentions her friends are watching I record that.

I let her have free control on Netflix as she has her own profile which is locked to childrens programmes but never with the actual TV.

So when do I start letting her channel surf and choose herself?

My big worry is that she’ll flick to the news and see something inappropriate or a bit scary, or she’ll get frustrated because she can’t find the programme she wants so I’ll spend more time looking for it than she will watching it. She literally mixes up numbers, so I can tell her she needs channel 609 (not real channel we watch just an example) and she’ll put on 153.

She still seems so small to me, and she still watches a lot of cbeebies (through choice, I record it and if she asks for it I put it on). She does also love Nick Junior.

So what age? My parents never let me choose what to watch until I was well into my teens, so I might be a bit scewed in my view. I thought once she caught recognise numbers at least, but Im not sure.

@PlanDeRaccordement

Why does she need an eye consultant in a hospital for an eye test? Surely you can get that from an optometrist on the high street?
She was born with an eye problem that we think is causing some of the issues, she's always been under the consultant. They have told us not to just get an eye test on the high street until they discharge us.

Re other needs, school have said apart from reading she seems fine although she did have speech and fine motor delays. She sometimes struggles with writing and her drawings are still very immature - i.e. you can't always make out what its supposed to be.

She's entering year 3 and thats when she can apparently have assessments, so we've been waiting for this point in her education.

Supportwise I read everyday with her, I encourage her to colour and draw and write but don't force, we have ago at recognising numbers and letters on signs and in books, we cook. It#s just the two of us at home so we're always chatting away about random things.

Well, that's useless of them. You need to kick up more of a fuss, how it's affecting her schooling etc. Does the eye condition mean an opticians won't be able to give her an eye test? Do you have to tell the consultant you've been for one?

Have you asked her if she sees a difference in the numbers? If you write e.g. an 8 and a 9 (with a straight upright) or a 2 & 7 can she see/describe a difference between the two? Might give you a clue as to if she sees it as one big blur.

The school seem to have a very relaxed attitude…

We've already had two EHCP applications rejected due to her being to young for assessment and school being unable to show they've spent £6k. I know thats not legal but I'm on my own with her and want to keep a good relationship with school so if they're not backing me I'm not going to push for it.

At school she has time with the class TA both 1-1 and in a small group, she's in the covid catch up groups although funding has no stopped, she was put forward for the councils summer school scheme by school and she attended for 2 weeks of that (it was either 2 full weeks or 10 days over 4 weeks). She's generally happy at school and is not in any means the worst, there's children in her class who've been off due to the lockdowns who can no longer tie their own shoes or get changed for PE, so while school are trying they're limited recources have to be spread out.

Op that's so hard.

Because how can you move forward if you don't know why she can't learn?

I've had a similar situation with my dd and thankfully at the moment I can pay for tutors for her. It's quite urgent that she's helped now before she gets further behind.

I'd be going crazy for the eye appointment, that's holding everything up?
Keep going with reading to her, does she have a good understanding of words?

She seems to understand the story yes, she will happily explain whats happening in a story told.

I think once we know if it's her eyes causing the issue and it can be fixed with glasses, surgery etc. then we can move forwards at school either pushing for the EHCP.

School are thinking either eyes or dyslexia but I think are reluctant to pay for the assessment (or ask the council to) if it turns out to be her eyes and basically an NHS problem.

Can she pattern match at all?
So eg if you had shapes dominoes would she be able to match ends or would it be random?
Or can she recognise a star from a square?

I think school (and you) are being too relaxed about this. I do know how easy it is to be fobbed off by a school (I let myself be on too many occasions for both of mine).

You need to get advocating assertively for your child to find out what is going on.
