Would you go to A&E

10 month old DD. Very snotty, red eyed, coughy - took her for a covid test this morning. But she won't drink, hadn't had anything since just before 7 this morning. Her hands are a bit warmer now but her feet are cold. Has a temp that responds to nurofen.

What would you do? 111 will just tell me to go because of her age. I don't want to expose her to stuff unnecessarily if it's just a virus.

Not drinking is concerning. Has she had any wet nappies?

DueyCheatemAndHow · 29/08/2021 14:22

I know that's my biggest sticking point. Yes nappy was wet when I changed her before her nap but she had had it on all morning (not a usual occurrence, issues getting to covid testing). She's breastfed and is just not interested

I would phone 111 first and see what they say. They might be able to arrange for you to see an out of hours GP Flowers

For what reason would you be taking her? What are you worried about?

I personally probably wouldnt

Is she eating? Will she try an ice lolly?

MyFloorIsLava · 29/08/2021 14:25

I suppose you could quickly try a saline nasal spray, she might be not feeding as she can't breathe through her nose. But if you're worried and she's not drinking then I wouldn't put off a&e for very long.

lannistunut · 29/08/2021 14:30

When I don't know what to do, I follow the NHS advice unless I have a feeling something is wrong.

So look up the NHS advice for babies & dehydration www.nhs.uk/conditions/dehydration/ , and babies & temperatures www.nhs.uk/conditions/fever-in-children/ - is there anything on there that suggests you need to either go to A&E or phone 111?

Personally, I would not allow the worry of what they might pick up in hospital put me off getting help for what I believe is currently wrong.

Good luck Flowers and 111 will advise you.

234Pepperplant · 29/08/2021 14:31

Have you syringed some fluids/water/expressed breast milk into her? Use a calpol syringe.

I don’t think you need A&E but you might need out of hours GP appointment. She’s probably got a sore throat/sore ears.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 29/08/2021 14:35

Thank you. The NHS says 8 hours with no fluid is a concern as is the hands and feet. I just don't want her to get weaker and weaker if I'm sitting there thinking 'she just needs to rest.

She is currently on me asleep. Haven't tried a syringe, ill do that when she wakes thank you

Hyacinth88 · 29/08/2021 14:39

Hope she is OK. Good plan to phone

DueyCheatemAndHow · 29/08/2021 14:40

Thank u. Awful seeing them ill

lannistunut · 29/08/2021 14:42

I do find those ticklists quite helpful. I then make a mental note 'I will phone if it gets to x o'clock'. But if ever you have the doom-y feeling - ignore the ticklists and just phone/go straight away.

Hope she's OK. It is awful when they are ill.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 29/08/2021 14:43

She's woken and is feeding.

OP posts:
Ostryga · 29/08/2021 14:47

Good she’s feeding!!

When they’re under one I always err on the side of caution. They can go downhill so quickly, and conversely bounce back from what you think is an awful sickness equally quickly!

Hope everything is ok Flowers

lannistunut · 29/08/2021 14:48

@DueyCheatemAndHow

She's woken and is feeding.
They always start feeding just at the point you get really worried!!!!

Good news.

Bhappy12 · 29/08/2021 14:49

We've been on the phone with 111 last night and this morning with our (slightly older) son who has very similar symptoms.
They suggested using a calpol syringe to get 10ml of fluids in him every 10 minutes, and call back if no wet nappies in 6 hours. Otherwise they seemed not that concerned, but DS is a little bit older than your DD.

No idea if this is helpful info or not, but my son started very similarly to your daughter and has now (after 2 days of a temperature) come out in a rash around his mouth, bottom, hands and feet that they're pretty sure is hands, foot and mouth. Just in case it's helpful to be on the lookout for.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 29/08/2021 20:57

Thanks everyone.

She does have a mark at the side of her mouth. Will keep an eye. My son had HFM and was miserable.

I go back to work from mat leave on Tuesday. Oh the joys....

Hope whatever is wrong passes quick xx

DueyCheatemAndHow · 29/08/2021 22:30

Oh crikey @alexio sorry to hear that, 2 wee ones ill at the same time is awful! Poor them and you!

alexio · 29/08/2021 22:34

@DueyCheatemAndHow

Such a shame for them both my oldest has been hit hardest with it. But it def started around his mouth then hands and feet with a high temp and then everywhere else so made me think it was HFM

Evidencebased · 29/08/2021 22:37

There's a reason 111 advised you to go to A&E.
v young children- under 1 yr old- can go downhill extremely rapidly.
Reach a serious situation v quickly.
take their advice.
go to A &E now.

Op said that's what they would advise not what they did advise.

For what it's worth I'd also suggest syringing fluids and seeing if they'll take that. If not then I'd call 111 back assuming they didn't already get you seen. Hope little one feels better soon, it's not nice seeing them poorly when so tiny

DueyCheatemAndHow · 29/08/2021 22:48

@BeHappyAndSmile thank you, she is feeding again and her temp is reacting to nurofen. Just so snotty poor wee thing.

Glad to hear! It's always a worry when they won't feed! When my little one had a cold we found the calpol plug in worked wonders for helping with the snotty hard to breathe phase of you've not tried that already. It was like chewing airwaves Grin
