Son moving to East London, will a GP be able to prescribe his Ritalin?

My ds is moving to London to a new job and he's currently being prescribed Ritalin by the mental health services where we are.

Does anybody know if that area's GPs would be able to prescribe under a shared care agreement or will he need to be referred to a mental health service first? He's worried that he won't be able to get a prescription once he's moved there.

I am sure they will be able to contact his last GP to confirm the prescription.

He hasn't been handed over to his GP yet and different areas have different rules Sad

A GP won’t be able to prescribe under a shared care agreement unless your son is seeing a specialist so he will need a mental health referrals anyway. The difficulty will be the length of time he may have to wait to be seen, my DS is on medication for ADHD too and this is the sort of thing that worries me for when he is older!

It depends to be honest. Best thing would be to talk to his mental health team and see if they can transfer him over to the services where he is moving to, or liaise with a GP there to see if they are content to prescribe it on their say so (unlikely though). As his current GP will be prescribing on their say so it's probably not overly useful speaking to them about it in the first instance.

To add, my brother moved and his mental health team referred him to the team covering his new area who saw him very quickly and it was all transferred over with no hassle.

Okay, thanks for these answers.
