Would you go camping alone?

I love the idea of taking my car and a small tent and just camping a few days alone near a beach or some hills.

I am usually very anxious in crowds or p

My DH does this sometimes, he's rather go wild camping but i insist he stays in a proper campsite until he researches it all a bit better (he was going to just camp anywhere - he'll get it wrong lol 😆
He feels that it helps get him away from it all. I'm more of a spa weekend kinda gal 😉

ElvenDreamer · 29/08/2021 08:35

Not sure where you are based OP but bare in mind wild camping is technically illegal in England, Wales and NI. There are lots of little remote campsites though, often you see single tents and a person with their dog. Go for it I say.

*sorry, typo, bear in mind!

The idea is great but the reality, not so much. Too many weirdos out there.

SpicyJalfrezi · 29/08/2021 08:40

I had to spend a night in my car once. I was terrified, so I personally wouldn’t.

Saz12 · 29/08/2021 09:52

I have and would again. But only in isolated places - somewhere that no-one at all is likely to happen across you, so there’s an absolutely tiny chance of coinciding with someone who would do you harm.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/08/2021 09:56

I wouldn't go camping at all, alone or with people. I have holidayed alone though, it was great. If you enjoy camping, do it!

FAQs · 29/08/2021 09:59

Yep, you can find sites on pitch up that have no facilities other than a toilet and possibly a shower these are one step up from wild camping but you have security, they are usually really quiet and rarely have children but give you security.

newnortherner111 · 29/08/2021 09:59

I wouldn't out of concern something might be stolen, assuming I was leaving a tent unattended for a while.

BrozTito · 29/08/2021 10:01

I do it loads. Get your camping and bushcraft skills up first or its exhausting work. There are alsospecialist 'nearly wild camping' sites i can suggest in your area. I went with others nfirst but now alone. I sleep out in the half open so i can see everything and wont get spooked, build a quick screen to hide fire and take an axe, dog and wasp spray

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 29/08/2021 10:02

I've done this but not car-camping with lots of gear - backpacking with a light tent and the essentials. It's always been enjoyable and the routes I go on don't tend to have anyone on them at all.
You need to aim for 10kg or less though otherwise it's more knackering than it's worth.

BrozTito · 29/08/2021 10:04

I know a woman who did a few weeks camping in beaches, forests and old temples in greece and now determined to do it myself next year alongside finnish lakes this winter.

Iwanttobeapaperbackwriter · 29/08/2021 10:05

As pp says wild camping not allowed in England and I know of people being moved in the night which they were fully prepared for but would scare me. But camping in remote campsites is wonderful when alone.

Oblomov21 · 29/08/2021 10:08

Terrified of what? Shame to see all this anxiety. I'd be off. Just go OP. What's the worst that can happen? You don't like it and come home? Bet you will. I'm posting from my caravan bed.

AlwaysLatte · 29/08/2021 10:09

I took my dog and camped alone when I was about 30. But it wasn't quite as much fun as I thought and the 3 days was reduced to 2, but I did enjoy the beach walks with my dog.

notacooldad · 29/08/2021 10:11

Yes I would go along and I do from time to time.
Not far just in the mountains in the The Lakes.

BrozTito · 29/08/2021 10:13

Wild camping is a civil matter. All they do is ask you to move on. Ive got a few places were the owners have come across me camping but seen i clean the area and have respect so they now leave me to it. Other places like beaches often dont really have an owner. Just be sensible and respectful and you will be fine. The laws are really there to stop scummy fly campers but a blind eye is given to good campers, especially in some areas like Dartmoor, lake district and peak district

ImFree2doasiwant · 29/08/2021 10:15

I'd work up to it if you're anxious. Plenty of tiny camp sites that provide a pod or shepherd's hut type thing.

Droidian · 29/08/2021 10:17

@TrampolineForMrKite

I wouldn't go camping on my own, no. That said, nor would I go camping with my husband, in a group, with my family, for a significant amount of money or even with 1995 Colin Firth (even if he turned up at my front door dressed as Mr. Darcy and carrying a pop-up tent).

I can see if you liked the idea of camping in the first place and like your own company though, it might be quite nice except for the bit in the tent

YY except with Dave Grohl 1997. Also not brave enough.
BrozTito · 29/08/2021 10:24

I take a camo net with me as well, so if im using my tent stove you cant see my camp site till you're inside it day or night

Woooooman · 29/08/2021 10:30

I go camping on my own all the time

If you want recommendations of a great and safe camp site on the south coast (nearish Brighton/shoreham) let me know!

longwayoff · 29/08/2021 10:37

Too old now, ouch, but if I could I would. But I'd take my dog too, far more alert than I am. Nobody would approach my tent flap undetectedSmile

ShingleBeach · 29/08/2021 11:21

I have been camping on my own several times. It’s really wonderful.

But I don’t go wild camping. I don’t agree with non-legal wild camping, and I might feel a bit nervous.

There are many lovely quiet ‘wild style’ campsites. Secluded pitches, loads of space, quiet policies, child-free if that is what you want.

You can search with lots of filters on Pitch Up . Try ‘wild style’ ‘campfires allowed’ for starters.

garlictwist · 29/08/2021 12:01

I am doing that right now. I actually prefer to camp alone than with someone else as the noise of another person rolling around on their camping mat in a shared tent is so annoying!

There's not much to do in the evening but I've been going out on my bike for a bit and then reading when it gets dark so it's been OK.

garlictwist · 29/08/2021 12:02

I am also wild camping as I hate campsites but up on the fells so it's OK and out of the way
