There's a lizard under my fridge

Massive one –length of my forearm plus tail.

I found it in the shower, herded it into the kitchen to try and get it out of the kitchen door, and it squeezed under the fridge instead.

How do I get it out?

I live alone so can't lift the fridge straight up, and I'm worried if I pull or tip it that I'll squash him.

I can leave the door open and leave the house quiet so he'll hopefully leave on his own, but if I don't SEE him leave I'll constantly be wondering if he died under there and I don't want to deal with a dead lizard!

What would you do?!

I think the door open is a good plan. I guess you would have to get down on hands and knees to check if he is still there? I can see why you don't fancy that though.

MancMum2000 · 27/08/2021 20:02

Could you make a little trail of fruit from the fridge to the door to entice him out?

JuniperBeer · 27/08/2021 20:04

Errrr where do you live OP? Is it an escaped pet lizard?

Ermmm where did it come from...do you live in the australian outback?Shock

MaggieFS · 27/08/2021 20:04

Can't believe the first reply isn't where are you? How is there a lizard under the fridge? Or just good old WTF?

You seem like this isn't that odd so I'll assume you're somewhere where lizards are normal! I'd leave the door open. When I was a kid growing up in the tropics, they'd head out once it was quiet. I assume hiding because scared.

LuluJakey1 · 27/08/2021 20:05

Is this in the UK? If so it is an escaped lizard as we don't have them that big. Call the RSPCA and they will come and rescue and re-home him.

ParkheadParadise · 27/08/2021 20:07

What would I do?
Move house

penguinwithasuitcase · 27/08/2021 20:27

Ha! Sorry, should have said - no, not in the UK.

Big lizards fairly common here - but usually OUTSIDE the house Grin

@starpatch I tried having a look but even with a torch I can't tell what's lizard and what's fridge cable/feet!

Do you like lizards?

I'd be having conniptions OP.

It's times like this when a spider the size of a saucer runs out that I miss my dear dad.

gncq · 27/08/2021 20:50

Maybe ring a neighbor?
Not sure many people on this site have experience of this!

isthismylifenow · 27/08/2021 21:15

We have loads too (not in UK either). Just leave the door open, it will make its way out. I had one peering over the top of my curtain rail, just sat there watching me. I honestly thought it was a snake until I went outside and looked through the window from the outside. He was massive. At least 1m long . I stuck my arm in and opened the window and closed the door. It was a short visit, never saw him again.

underneaththeash · 27/08/2021 21:48

Get a stick and push it out?

My kids picked up one the other day on a cushion and it jumped at the camera!

TSSDNCOP · 27/08/2021 22:58

Flicking hell 1m long

penguinwithasuitcase · 28/08/2021 11:35

Left the door open all night and the fool is still under there. Have equipped myself with two garden canes and a headlamp... wish me luck, I'm going in!

Eek poor thing must be terrified!

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 28/08/2021 11:53

I used to have a mouse trap welly trick when the cats used to bring me live mice. Place welly beside fridge. Shine torch on mouse/lizard. Mouse/lizard runs into nice dark welly. Grab welly & fold top over. Release mouse/lizard outside.

Granted you’d need a massive welly for a big lizard…

TBH I’m quite envious of you being somewhere warm enough to have lizards, and having a lizard encounter.

Lweji · 28/08/2021 11:56

It's probably warm under the fridge.
If you also get large bugs, I'd adopt it. Grin

CatherineCawood · 28/08/2021 11:56

I'll swap you for the rat behind my dishwasher. Shudder. Seems to be immune to the bloody poison, of which it has eaten shed loads, and not died! Envy

Humane trap might have been a better option.

iloveeverykindofcat · 28/08/2021 12:03

I'd just move tbh. That's the lizards house now.

ClemDanFango · 28/08/2021 12:08

I would LOVE this. Boring old south east London all we get is the odd field mouse. Though did once find a newt in the garden that was an exciting day.

3Br1tnee · 28/08/2021 12:12

Adopt it.

I think he is, poor thing.

He's clearly not very smart, either - he's had an easy 'out' from back there multiple times and not taken it!

Had one terrifying moment just now where I was standing up with the torch looking for him on the floor behind the fridge, raised my eyes and found he'd climbed the (smooth) wall and was staring at me right at eye level! Eek!

We need a photo Grin

dudsville · 28/08/2021 12:22

But, of all the creatures that could find it's way into your home, isn't this one of the more useful ones? Wouldn't they eat insects???
