I've been craving '80s movies lately for some reason. I'd appreciate any recommendations.

TIA

Oh. And Nine To Five.

JulesJules · 27/08/2021 20:42

Oh loads of these already mentioned - I love Trading Places, Working Girl, Desperately Seeking Susan, Letter to Brezhnev... but my favourite is The Big Easy. Love that film!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/08/2021 20:46

How could I forget Steel Magnolias and Nine to Five!

Kanaloa · 27/08/2021 20:47

Agree with the Karate Kid. So fantastically 80s from the fashion to the story.

Anything with either of the two Coreys in pretty much hits the 80s button for me. I do love The Lost Boys, but I have a little soft spot for Lucas too. The little Corey Haim in that movie reminds me of my little boy, sort of out of place sometimes.

elQuintoConyo · 27/08/2021 20:48

Lots of the above, except Jaws was 1975 Grin

If we can throw in any John Carpenter, I'll be happy: The Thing, The Fog (1979+1980 I think).

Flight of the Navigator - for kids, lovely.

Any Arnold Schwarzenegger: The Running Man, Twins, Terminator, Total Recall.

Any and al John Hughs.
Any and all Bratpack (Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy)

Weekend at Bernie's is a must!

The Hand that Rocks the Cradle (might just sneak into the 90s).

BananaOatmeal · 27/08/2021 20:49

Thank you all so much for the suggestions. I'm looking forward to watching as many of these as I can.

Karate Kid is also so desperately 80s in that the storyline is absolutely nonsensical. Kid gets attacked by an evil karate gang (matching motorcycles and red outfits, natch) then coincidentally meets a janitor who happens to be a karate genius and can beat up 6 people all at once, who trains him in a 5 minute montage to beat a kid who has been doing karate competitions for about 10 years, with a kick that would only work if your opponent ran full tilt at you, and why would they given that it’s very clear what you’re about to do? It’s nuts but that’s why it’s fantastic.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 27/08/2021 20:51

Howard The Duck.

(I still think this is an under-rated classic.)

DrWankincense · 27/08/2021 20:52

The Man with Two Brains
The Jerk (1979) but still.
Short Circuit
Little Shop of Horrors

Unfashionable · 27/08/2021 20:57

Trading Places. Particularly because it has now been declared ‘problematic’ by the fatuous woke brigade. And there was me thinking the entire bloody point of the film was to lampoon racial stereotypes.....

DrWankincense · 27/08/2021 20:59

Loved Trading Places.
"It. Was. Not. Me. It.was.the.Dukes" Grin

CathyorClaire · 27/08/2021 21:05

A little bit off the beaten track - Quest For Fire

bamboocat · 27/08/2021 21:12

Local Hero
Raiders of the Lost Ark

Plus loads of others already mentioned, but those two are my favourites.

bamboocat · 27/08/2021 21:14

And another - Buster. Great soundtrack on that one.

Veh1970 · 27/08/2021 21:14

Chariots of Fire
Dance with a Stranger
My Beautiful Launderette
Dangerous Liaisons
Maurice
The Long Good Friday
Mona Lisa
Scandal

dayswithaY · 27/08/2021 21:24

Dance with a stranger is one of my all time favourite films. Miranda Richardson is so beautiful and her clothes are stunning.

Absolute Beginners - it was a massive flop but I think visually it's amazing. I could watch it all day.

Say Anything with John Cusack.
