I’m in the Reading vicinity for a couple of days and am looking for ideas of good things to do or nice places to visit? I have a car.

Any ideas very welcome.

It’s Reading festival so you could take a picnic basket down to the Mapleduram side of the river and listen.

Pierreponts cafe in Goring followed by a walk down the river.

The Lookout park (free) and Coral Reef (costs) in Wokingham are good for kids.

Drive to Newbury to visit Highclere castle (need to book)/ and walk up Beacon Hill. Visit Newbury town and Donnington castle (free) Go to the races/ visit the watermill theatre.

I don’t know if you can do this but go to Nirvana Spa for the day.

There is a food festival in Bracknell.

Visit Bray and Windsor Castle

Thanks, I’ll have a look at some of those! Which cinema would be the best/easiest to get to?

Showcase cinema in Winnersh, free parking, it's a cinema deluxe with comfy reclining seats.

In Reading itself, the Museum is great, full size replica of the Bayeux Tapestry in there, also visit the Abbey ruins in the town centre. A walk along the Kennet and Avon / Thames path is nice, you can walk all the way to Sonning which is a pretty village. But if you're here now, probably worth avoiding the town centre while the festival is on.

What kind of thing do you like to do?
There is a complete replica of the bayeux taptesry in the reading museum which is fascinating to see and is always completely empty.

How far out of reading can you go!
Nice village of Sonning near by, of George cloony, Theresa may and the spoon bender fame?
Some nice pubs on the river there.

Or henely on Thames?

I’m here now and am spending a few days with a friend whilst our kids are at the festival so will probably avoid the centre of the city, which is a shame as the museum sounds good.

I’ll have a look at Winnersh for the cinema. The food festival and sinning sound good too.

I would probably catch the train for a day out to Windsor….

Loads of nice walks on the Thames around Sonning, you can finish with a drink in the Bull at Sonning, as George Clooney does.

ediblereading.com/ has loads of nice places to eat. If you are going to the cinema at Winnersh, you could go to La De Kitchen in Woodley.

The University campus is lovely to walk around - the Harris Gardens in particular and then you can wander over to Cafe Yolk or Montys Cafe for food.
