DS sent home from school for wrong shoes - can anyone help me find some non-leather non-trainers polishable black shoes that can be delivered by tomorrow?

Argh, first day back at school, year 11. DS wore the same black lace up shoes he wore all last year, but the school has changed their uniform policy over the summer and they are no longer allowed as they look too much like trainers. Apparently we were emailed about this but we must have missed it amongst the many other emails about Covid tests, etc - and judging by the fact that almost half the year were sent home, the message obviously wasn’t clear.

DS is vegan and won’t wear leather, so we need to find him some smart black non-leather shoes by Tuesday. We’re away all weekend so ideally I need to order something that can be delivered over the weekend. He’s size 6 or 7.

These look ideal but they’re not in his size.

These are non-leather in his size but I doubt will be allowed as they’re too much like trainers.

Help!

Have a look on Schuh. I went there yesterday and there were loadsssss of non-leather shoes and they do next day delivery 😊

Olympiadreamer · 27/08/2021 13:14

Amazon Prime?

Mojoj · 27/08/2021 13:17

I'd find him a new school. Seriously? With all the crap that's going on right now, his school come up with this??

Thanks @girlmom21 there are lots on the Schuh website but when I filter it to his size and black, they’re all trainers.

Will try Amazon Prime next.

@Mojoj don't be daft. You'd pull a kid out of their GCSE year over a uniform rule? I doubt it.

It's a standard rule anyway and OP isn't disputing it, just asking for help finding shoes!

Woeismethischristmas · 27/08/2021 13:21

I got some slip on versions of black non leather polish able shoes at Tesco for my 11yo if you’re going past one.

Lalallama · 27/08/2021 13:22

@Mojoj don’t worry, the school have had the brunt of mine and DH’s wrath. DS’s year group have been out of school more than they were in over the last year because of isolations and things, and then they send half the year group home on their first day back rather than giving them a warning. In their GCSE year. We’ve sent him back in, in his ‘wrong’ shoes.

Move to Scotland!(Not serious). Secondary school uniform has been relaxed so much here that it barely resembles a uniform at all. Arse high skirts, trainers and hoodies de rigeur. Some of them looked like they've dropped off a flitting, they are so scruffy

Starisnotanumber · 27/08/2021 13:28

If he will get the wear out of them and his feet have stopped growing would vegan doc martens fit the bill or would the sticking be an issue

Starisnotanumber · 27/08/2021 13:28

Sorry stitching not sticking

Woeismethischristmas · 27/08/2021 13:29

I personally feel it is a daft rule and hoping that our local schools stick to black trainers allowed. Surely children are more inclined to be active (play football etc.) in breaks/ lunch if they wearing trainers than polished shoes? DS chose polished shoes for indoor wear but has school trainers for outside.

ManifestDestinee · 27/08/2021 13:31

England is mental with this stuff. Sending kids home because they are wearing shoes that were allowed last year? That's insanity.
Why not get all the parents together and just say NO to this nonsense?

BikeRunSki · 27/08/2021 13:34

Drichmann do a lot of non-leather shoes (budget rather than ethics I think!).

Peaseblossum22 · 27/08/2021 13:37

This makes me sooo angry . As ling as they are clean and neat what does it matter . Is this really all the school can find to worry about, what about all the parents who gave list jobs,/businesses over the last 18 months why should they have to buy new footwear when they have perfectly adequate clean and dry footwear . Ridiculous

Tickledtrout · 27/08/2021 13:38

Next stock some of the startrite range I think OP.
It is absolutely ridiculous of course. Punitive, confrontational and interested only in what can be seen and ticked; all that's wrong with our education system and the opposite of what we all need right now.

Eaumyword · 27/08/2021 13:42

I work in a school-can't believe they sent him home for that?! Surely an email home asking for regulation shoes by say next week would have been more productive!
Anyway...I think a good bet would be a supermarket. Asda do good cheap non leather school shoes or Tesco as a pp mentioned.

Are you in England, OP? Where have schools started back already? I’m next Friday and I thought that was quite early!
Lalallama · 27/08/2021 13:47

Yes we're in England. Our area always has an earlier summer holiday, most schools went back on weds this week.

I've managed to find a pair in Next, DH has gone to pick them up, and I've also got a couple of pairs on order with Amazon Prime. Hoping the school email back before the weekend as I've sent them photos to check they're ok.

Sympathies OP, can’t stand militant uniform conformity at school, especially when it contradicts what children will learn about sustainability and environmentalism.

Lalallama · 27/08/2021 13:50

I'm normally really supportive of school uniform policies, if you choose to go to the school you're agreeing to their policies, but to change it just before his last year with unclear communication about it (the website still says the old rules) is bonkers. It feels as though they don't want the children back.

Some parents had specifically bought new shoes thinking they were correct and will now have to find the money for more.

AntiSocialDistancer · 27/08/2021 13:52

Well before I had children (and foot problems) I used to support school shoe policies.

Now I think, children are out of the house all day, often walking to school. What's wrong with letting them wear an all black shoe, be it ballet pump or trainer? Hmm

Bonkers rules! Do shoes affect learning?? Don't think so!

I would say no. The rules published on their own website can't be overruled at this stage in the game.

Whatwouldscullydo · 27/08/2021 14:00

You would think that with all the environmental concerns, the hideous traffic on the roads, the childhood obesity epidemic, that priority would be comfortable practical shies suitable for walking to akd from.school and going out to the park or for a walk after.

Instead we force them into shoes purely for cosmetic reasons that aren't practical fir walking any distance to school.

But hey at least their feet hidden under a desk fir 6 hours a day look.smart Hmm
