Bladder infection

Bodgedboxdye · 26/08/2021 21:33

Hey, all.

I’ve had a bladder infection for a few weeks now, I took a 3 day antibiotics course a week or so ago, and it went for a week, then came back. I’ve now started a 7 day antibiotic course and it’s showing no sign of letting up (I’m on day 4)

I have no pain when peeing, just a constant urge to (pressure in my bladder)

Please tell me it’ll go, I can’t cope. /:

Thank you.

Horrible isn't it? Have you tried D Mannose powder? You can buy it on Amazon. That should help. Have you had your urine cultured by GP by sending a sample?

Bodgedboxdye · 26/08/2021 21:54

@blossomtree323 I haven’t sent a sample yet, the last doctor I spoke to said I’d need to send one, but the next doctor didn’t ask.

I haven’t tried it, but I’ve heard of it. What does it do? Can I get it at the pharmacy? Or just online?

D-mannose really helps, I tried it after seeing it on NHS website. You can get big bags of tablets on Amazon, they completely sorted my recurrent cystitis/constant urge to wee feeling. Best thing ever. I take one day as a preventative now, but when you are suffering you can take I think six a day and it gets rid of that constant wanting to wee. It's a really awful feeling op, you have my sympathy.

@Kwackerly thank you. I’ve brought it on myself as I don’t drink water (a lot of tea, though)

I’ll order them now. I’ll be taking the whole bag at this point. Haha

It will go, I feel for you! It's awful. The last one I had I was on antibiotics for 7 days, then a further 5 days. It only shifted around day 9! I was shocked how tough it was to budge! Hope it improves for you soon. X

Bodgedboxdye · 26/08/2021 22:17

@eandz13 thank you. Same. It’s holding on till the bitter end. Haha

I’m hoping this course of antibiotics shifts it.

Don't want to worry you but if it won't go away or keeps recurring get a scan. Mine was suspected kidney stones but it turned out to be a very enlarged kidney.

Bodgedboxdye · 26/08/2021 22:33

@Charley50 did you feel it in your kidneys? How did they treat it when they found that out?
@Charley50 did you feel it in your kidneys? How did they treat it when they found that out?
I felt a lot of lower back pain in my kidney area, eventually a pain so bad i collapsed. This was after two years of regular antibiotics for recurring UTIs. That's when I got the scan. I think what I had (one non-functioning kidney) was quite unusual but I understand that untreated (or not properly treated) UTIs can lead to kidney infection which is can have serious complications.

Enko · 28/08/2021 09:48

I 2nd Charley50 my urine infection turned into a bad kidney infection and its one of the worst pains I've ever experienced (I have given birth thats nowhere close)

I am puzzled as to why you didn't send in a sample the first time? I would do so straight away as you may have the wrong anti biotics and a sample will show if they need to be changed.

Charley50 · 28/08/2021 09:55

Yes I think UTIs are so common in women that they they aren't taken seriously (surprise surprise!), but they can develop into something very serious.

Bodgedboxdye · 28/08/2021 10:23

@Enko I didn’t go into the doctors, the doctor called me, asked my symptoms and then told me to pick up the antibiotics from the pharmacy. I also assumed that I’d take the antibiotics and it would clear up (which it did the first time around)

I wasn’t asked to do a sample when I called this time, but I didn’t expect to be. I’ll be calling again on Tuesday so will defo be doing a sample.

This may be a long shot, but could I have stretched my bladder? The reason I say this is because when my symptoms started I was drinking a lot (tea) but not going to the bathroom when I needed it, I then felt it go into a bladder infection (bladder feeling full even after I’d been to the bathroom) however, the first time this happened, I took my first lot of antibiotics and it went so I dunno if that is the case, I’m just throwing it out there.

Get some Uva Ursi tincture, this will shift the infection and calm any inflammation.

Don't drink any coffee or fruit juices until things have settled down.

Enko · 28/08/2021 11:14

You said you were asked for a sample the first time. So bring it in. The likely reason the antibiotics didn't work the first time is because they were the wrong sort for your bacteria.

I get uti a lot and I have done the call in and when they say bring a sample I drop it down and sometimes I get a call saying wrong anti biotic new ones sent to pharmacy. It is really Important to do the sample.

The antibiotics didn't work the first time as you needed a 2nd lot. To me this suggests you had a 2ndary infection that the first antibiotic didn't deal with but it was masked as it dealt with the primary infection hence you get the week of no pain. Ita not a week of no infection its a week where your other bacteria is working themselves up to get bigger for the infection you now feel.

I cant stress how important to bring down that sample is. I would do so now too even if not asked by 2nd doctor. Trust me kidney infections are NOT fun I was floored for months.

I am all for trying different alternative ways to deal with this. Many years ago I used a herbal remedy called saporino that worked wonders. However when I get to the point I need antibiotics then I bring the sample when asked as like I explained there can be bacteria that the first lot doesn't get.

Enko · 28/08/2021 11:16

Also you won't have "stretched" your bladder you feel the need to go because the bacteria is irritating you urito walls its horrible.

Enko · 28/08/2021 11:27

The fact you didn't go to the toilet when you needed could have been why the bacterial growth started .. basically urine in your bladder has bacteria in it and if that gets to sit there too long ot can cause bacteria growth. So the lack of going when you needed could be the reason for your current infection. (It coild also be other things but that sounds like the most likely explanation here)

Bodgedboxdye · 28/08/2021 11:32

Sorry @Enko I didn’t word it correctly, the first doctor said if it didn’t clear up I would need to bring a sample down. And I was under the impression it would clear up so I was kind of like “yeah I will do” then when I rang up the second time, I wasn’t asked but presumed like the first time it would go in a few days. However, I appreciate that hasn’t been the case this time so will be taking a sample down as soon as possible. I’d take one now but it’s closed so as soon as it’s open, I’ll be sending one in.

Yup, I’ve tried the D-Mannose but haven’t felt anything as of yet. And thank you, I was trying to sleep last night and kept thinking “what if I’ve stretched my bladder” 🥲
