No McDonald's milkshakes!

Pinkywoo · 26/08/2021 11:29

Apparently due to shortages there are no McDonald's milkshakes in the whole country. I'm 12 weeks pregnant and feel like crap, a chocolate milkshake was one of the few things I could stomach, this is not acceptable!

I love the raspberry ripple iced cooler. Tastes like milkshake but better

DinosaurOfFire · 26/08/2021 13:12

@Pinkywoo

Potpourri23 the article mentions a "milkshake mix", I'm assuming they mix this with milk so they always taste the same amazing.
Another one who used to work in McDs as a teen. The milkshake mix is milk, sugar, milk powder, whey etc much like a plain non-flavoured ice cream mixture would be. This is then put into the machine and mixed with the required syrup flavour as its dispensed. The McFlurry mixture was thicker than the milkshake mix and flavoured vanilla already, which will be why some places have one but not the other. The machines were definitely cleaned thoroughly when I worked there! It was the hardest part of a close, taking it apart to clean, and vice versa putting it back together the next morning when it was clean and dried.

Like someone up thread said, it’s due to no drivers, not brexit.

And why do you think there aren't enough drivers Hmm

Nothing to do with brexit, every summer since time began they run out in the summer of milkshakes and ice cream. The machines are always “broken”

No drivers because…….? 🤓

Eve there are people - we need to be investing in them though, training them (and paying them decently) from school leaving age to be nurses etc and do all the jobs we currently import workers for. There are some areas of the country where there's hardly any decent, well paid work but still thousands of kids leaving school. It's going to take a while (and govt/industry commitment) for the country to accept the need to invest in the people here already. I suspect they will just recruit from other poor countries instead, so that people here can continue to buy cheap burgers and companies can continue to pay low wages and keep profit artificially high.
I've been a sahm for years - if an employer was willing to hire me and invest in my training and make it financially worth my while to return to work, they'd have a loyal employee for life!

There is plenty of stock of milk mix and bottled drinks at the depot- but there is a huge problem with low HGV driver numbers. So what little deliveries the stores can get, are being prioritised for burger ingredients, not bottled drinks which have a longer shelf life.
You need every item to be able to sell a burger so they are prioritising menu items.
The lack of HGV drivers is down to both Covid and Brexit. Last year the big logistics companies put a lot of their drivers on furlough, most of the drivers are from Eastern Europe, they decided to go back home rather than be stuck in England on furlough throughout the pandemic. The majority haven’t returned.
The DVLA also cancelled 30k HGV driving tests last year so that hasn’t helped the shortage. The govt also closed a loophole which agency drivers were using to register as limited companies to pay less tax, so the jobs are less attractive.
Brexit means that right to work in the UK is a pain to get for people now.

It’s a combination of things, but is only going to get worse. Pubs will be next, then supermarkets.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a market of hundreds of millions of people you could call on when there was a shortage of people for certain professions in certain regions? Better still they could all move around freely needing nothing more than a flash of their passport? Even better, in this particular Industry, imagine a world where they could move their goods over borders without customs and paperwork. It’d be great wouldn’t it?

Honestly, of all the things we might run out of, I really can't get too anxious about a totally unhealthy, over-sized product, full of sugar and rubbish that damages people's health.

It wouldn't hurt to be McShake-free for six months.

Now I expect to get flamed, but it's true. (Hides behind wall)

BarbaraofSeville · 26/08/2021 13:48

I know. If it didn't already exist, we'd probably try and invent it.

Pity we gave the choice to opt out to a load of people who didn't understand what they were voting for.

The problem is that Brexiteers seem to be coming up with various reasons for each business being crippled by Brexit somehow being bad.
  • Nandos is bad for chickens
  • KFC is shit food
  • Mcdonalds is unhealthy
  • Banks caused the financial crash
  • Farming is over subsidised

The truth is they all form part of our economy; they give people jobs, pay taxes, etc. Things are intertwined, if a company goes bust then it won't be employing cleaners, paying insurance premiums, paying suppliers, etc.

Nothing good is coming from this and will lead to deep recessions which in turn make everyone worse off.

Yawn, the McDs dog whistle.

The driver shortage isn't just affecting fast food. We can only get bread and milk in our Co-op on about 1 in 5 occasions at the moment.

There was hardly any fresh veg in Aldi when I went a few days ago. It almost drove me to McDs or some other fast food, because there was so many missing items on my list that I could make hardly any of the meals I had planned and was quite fed up with the whole situation.

This could be worth trying if your craving is continuing

About 30 years ago I read or saw a TV show that said McDonald’s milkshakes contained a lot of lard & have not had one since.

No idea if it is accurate or not, this is before we just googled everything we weren’t sure about!

Why do you think there are no drivers, if not Brexit?

The machines are "broken" when they need cleaning and nobody can be arsed to do it.

SayItBackwards · 28/08/2021 15:03

Our closest Burger King has never had milkshakes and we've lived here nearly 30 years, it's always 'the machine is broken'. Looks like they may now have a genuine excuse.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/08/2021 15:36

To be fair, Brexit is only one of a few reasons. Lorry drivers has been a shortage profession for years, retiring faster than new recruits coming in.

Add in Brexit, plus some being unable to work due to self isolation and what was previously a manageable shortage has tipped over into a critical one.
