Stupidity is also a pandemic...

Was out shopping today and was witnessing stupidity on a crazy level.... now I work in retail so I know the level of stupidity has defo exceeded my expectations which I might add are fairly low, but witnessing it as another customer has really proved to me what I already know.... this world is full of stupid people.... I mean it might be they just don’t give a shit, I’m hoping it is...

So I’m leaving a shop, a fairly small shop with an average size doorway, me and my daughter, we were single file as we were just a step out these 4 adults try to push in to the shop not in single file. Now I’m sorry but is it just me that thinks the logical thing to do in this situation is wait for people leaving the shop to fully exit then surprisingly there is more room also.. I can’t even.....

Anyway....what sheer stupidity have you witnessed whilst out and about.....?

I wouldn’t call that stupidity, just poor manners? They saw a doorway and decided they wanted to get through it before you did.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 26/08/2021 06:15

OP I think when you work in certain areas with the public for too long you get blurry eyes and suddenly everyone is stupid in one way or another.

Step back a bit.

Mybalconyiscracking · 26/08/2021 06:54

Well maybe they thought you and your daughter were pushing through?

PurpleAki · 26/08/2021 06:57

I agree. I think the average person is fairly thick, poor manners, and generally just gross lol. I hate people.

Brieeeeeeeeeeee · 26/08/2021 06:58

The general public are often rude, uncouth and boorish. Working in customer service has often lowered my patience for that kind of thing, like @Letsallscreamatthesistene says.

My biggest gripe is people who stop walking suddenly on a narrow path, oblivious to the fact that they’re in everyone else’s way.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/08/2021 07:00

We were at a tourist attraction the other day. Saw a lot of people who thought the whole width of the path was for their family group, while people walking the other way could somehow levitate or walk inside the animal enclosures. Or thought the narrowest bits of path were perfect for topping up suncream. Or just suddenly stopping in the middle of the paths.

On a different note...learner drivers. Sometimes they stall, struggle to set off etc. Driving round them really doesn't help. It just makes them struggle more.

One of my favourite quotes.

‘Remember, when you are dead, you do not know you are dead. It is only painful for others. The same applies when you are stupid.’
Ricky Gervais.

daisychain01 · 26/08/2021 07:10

There are probably things you've done when you've been in public that some random person saw, misinterpreted your intentions or the context at that moment, and lazily label you as "just stupid". You'll never know....

As for Ricky Gervais' wise crack, he doesn't realise quite how odious he comes across so the same applies!

Definitely agree with this.

I worked in public facing roles for almost a decade and it got to the stage that the measure of a good day was when you weren't called a c*nt by someone on the phone Sad.

impatience, too, OP is describing impatience ( which sometimes arises from anxiety, much exalted & defended on MN )

Self absorbed yes. Stupid not necessarily.

BogRollBOGOF · 26/08/2021 08:02

I'm always stunned by the number of people ambling around carparks blissfully unaware that a moving tonne of metal could potentially. If a car has those little white lights lit on the back, it's actually not a great idea to wander around 6 inches behind it.
Likewise, the knobs who think that it's fair play to charge around the car park at 30mph assiming no manouvering vehicles or zombie-like pedestrians.

Deathraystare · 26/08/2021 13:04

Yeah I get this a lot. They look at you as if to say "Why are you trying to get out when I want to come in?"

chocolateorangeinhaler · 26/08/2021 13:22

In a multi story. Has to reverse out of the space. Only I couldn't as someone had seen me go to my car and wanted the space I was leaving and they got too close. They couldn't reverse as had a growing queue of cars behind them.
I got out to tell the driver they would have to go round again as I had no room to reverse out. Cue effing and blinding at me because they wanted that exact space.

I just sat in the car playing on my phone with the sounds of blaring horns going on until them and the queue behind had cleared and I could reverse out.

Probably all over in 10 mins but it's surprising how quickly a multi story gets jammed up.

poorbuthappy · 26/08/2021 13:24

Same as people who try to get on the tube or into a lift before the people who are trying to get off.
