No sofa ...only chairs

Looking for some furniture advice for my living room. Moved into new house about 5 months ago. Only me in it. I have an annex off my kitchen which I've been using as a TV spot. It has an old 2 seater and a couple of grandma chairs which I will get covered once I've done some kitchen renovations. But I also have a small living room toward the front of my house separate to the kitchen. Essentially I want a cosy space to read a book or watch TV . Furniture as in drawers and book shelves will be kept to a minimum. I have to order a seating for this room but sort of hate 2 seater sofas , you can't lie down on them and if you sit on it , it's a bit too close for comfort for 2 to sit on. So I wondered about ...no sofa and 3 snugglers instead with pouffe. Anybody have experience of this, does it look daft/weird? Other suggestions welcome, !

I think you should have whatever you want in your own home. There is a danger that it will look like a waiting room so you will have to think about how you arrange them but there is no point in having a sofa if you don't like them.

Jumpingintosummer · 25/08/2021 20:35

I think it would look a bit odd tbh.

Could you do a 2 seater, footstool and a chair? Footstool used as extra seating when needed but for lounging too?

Ughmaybenot · 25/08/2021 20:39

It’s your home, order exactly what you want to! You don’t like two seater sofas (I can see your point!) so don’t order them.

Would this be the room you'd hang out in if you had visitors? Or is it more just for you?

Madge55 · 25/08/2021 21:17

Ruby Fowler, yes it would be where visitors would go. I have thought about the combo of 2 seater or 2.5 + 1 snuggler and a footstool/ pouffee .

Elaine Hawking yep you've hit the nail on the head, while Im not averse to being untraditional in my choices, the notion of it sort of jarred and that's why....it would look like a waiting room ..albeit a comfortable one.

Ughmaybenot ...yes you can spread out a bit on them but other than that not a lot really. I used to have a much wider living room and had a massive long sofa , it was so comfy and great for a nap but sadly was way too big for my now house.

I lived in two houses with small sitting rooms and a 2-seater sofa, armchair and footstool setup was practical, comfortable and cosy.

RubyFowler · 25/08/2021 21:36

I have a two seater, armchair, foot stool arrangement which works well.
I do see what you mean about a two seater sofa though.

Would a small corner sofa arrangement work?

Madge55 · 26/08/2021 04:37

Thanks for the suggestions. Ruby Fowler I have considered a corner unit but my style preference is pushing me into a more traditional sofa style despite a corner sofa maybe being a bit more practical for my needs. Borntobequiet my friend is coming with me today to look at my options. I've always inherited furniture this is the first time I've ever had to choose a suite and between dimensions, colours, material and sizes its become a whole industry. Confused

Sofas are good for curling up with close family, like younger kids and partners. But not so good for sharing with you FIL for example, or a stranger.

My parents have two recliner armchairs. And a sofa, but its barely used except to hold my mothers knitting. I think that can work quite well.

Oceanbliss · 26/08/2021 04:57

I have a 2 seater recliner with a centre console with cup holders which would solve the not being able to lie down on them and being too close or squished in problem. It’s very comfortable and I’ve often fallen asleep in them when watching a movie.

DerAlteMann · 26/08/2021 09:00

It's what we have. We chucked our last sofa out over 20 years ago. More space. we can re-arrange the room easily at short notice and hoovering is a piece of cake. Sofas, totally useless things.

LordEmsworth · 26/08/2021 09:08

My living room is pretty small and so when I redecorated a couple of years ago, I went for a couple of chairs and a footstool as I just couldn't find a sofa that wouldn't take up half the room. No regrets here and it looks very traditional (went for the wingback chairs & have lots of books so looks like a library). It definitely doesn't look like a waiting room...

Roominmyhouse · 26/08/2021 09:29

I replaced one of my sofas with a cuddler chair and foot stool and love it.

Jumpingintosummer · 26/08/2021 14:37

Hope the shopping expedition is going well.

Madge55 · 26/08/2021 17:46

Thanks Jumpingintosummer I didn't do too bad for an admittedly chronic indecisive procrastinator!! . My friend and I went to the sofa place this morning. I was armed with all manner of measurements, drawings and swatches. It was an hours drive away and being eager to get it done we got there for 9.30 (opening time). Honestly (read 'stupidly' too) thought we would be about 30 mins to an hour. We were there so long, we stopped for coffee midway ! Had to try and process the amount of options of styles, colours, sizes ! I have changed the style, colour, size and material from my original choices. My very patient friend and lady in the shop were the perfect duo to show me the error of my ways. So the plan is this ...I clear out my filled with rubbish living room ...mark out the size of my chosen style to better visualize where and how it will sit in my living room once all is said and done. Basically it is going to be an L shaped corner suite , which is very comfy, have a foot stool and a separate chair. The result is I can sit and not feel like I'm literally too close for comfort if I have a couple of visitors, with the added bonus of still being able to lie on it for a sneaky nap if needs be, not with the visitors there though ! My favoured choice of traditional style, although beautiful, just wouldn't have utilised the space to its best, but once I had seen the other modular type sofa and sat on it , i knew it was a better choice, it's still lovely but comfortable and practical too. This probably seems logical to most, but I'm a novice at big purchases, usually just got hand me downs and slotted them in rather than make a personal choice. Thanks to everyone for the different opinions.

That's great OP. I hope it's everything you want it to be.

Madge55 · 26/08/2021 20:26

Thanks Madge55, you've stopped me from making an expensive mistake.

I'm widowed and having to make decisions on my new living space, I'm finding it hard. I've downsized to a bungalow and had to leave my huge Tetrad behind and have been going cross eyed looking at the sofa choices for my bungalow kitchen/lounge extension tv room.

I was going to buy a three seater and a two seater for guests, but will go with the corner sofa instead. The only thing that's put me off is having to drag it out to change the spotlight, which is in the corner, but I'm sure I can manage it once or twice!

Madge55 · 29/08/2021 18:44

Salome61..happy to oblige !Smile
