Making money

Olympiadreamer · 25/08/2021 18:52

I'm struggling a little financially (nothing major but I'm often in my overdraft half way through the month and have no savings). I work 60+ a week as a teacher so earning extra money might be challenging. Any ideas? I don't want to sell via Ebay etc as the post office isn't open by the time I get home after work.

I'm going to go through cancelling any subscriptions etc and I'm going to aim not to buy stuff for my classroom from Sept which is where a lot of my money goes. My other major expense is my dog and dog walking.

As a teacher I think you are probably good on the computer and can easily make charts and other sorts of forms.

With those skills and just your imagination and you could make Digital Downloads that people will pay good money for. See here for some examples:

If you're a teacher, I'm surprised you're into an overdraft every month, so early in the month.
What's your monthly income, and what are your outgoings being spent on?

When you live by yourself it's challenging to keep up with utility bills, house repairs, car maintenance, dog walker bills etc.

Best to start by examining your income and expenditure and working out if there is anything you can cut back on. Do you have debt aside from the overdraft? Overdraft is one of the most expensive ways to borrow by the way.

Olympiadreamer · 25/08/2021 19:20

No debt other than mortgage. My overdraft charges very little interest so it's not expensive to be in my overdraft. However, I'd rather not be in it obviously. I want to have some savings. I've just cancelled Netflix, Amazon Prime and the grass cutter which were all unneeded silly luxuries.

Depending on what age you teach, could you not take on either babysitting or tutoring?

CustardyCreams · 25/08/2021 19:31

Could you offer tutoring, maybe for 11+ or gcse if you teach older kids?

Could you write a YA book and self publish it, try and make it a series so you offer the first for pennies but people are hooked and want to read more? I know someone who gave up their day job when this took off!

OnlyFans - could you offer something, like a cookery course whilst dressed as a Christmas Fairy? (Only kidding, I ran out of other ideas)

Olympiadreamer · 25/08/2021 19:31

Yeah I could do polmuggle if time allows.

There was (probably still is) a great app/website called Bean that scanned your accounts and told you every subscription you had. I always lose track of mine. When I did it, it found subscriptions adding up to £143 A MONTH. 😱 😱 😱

yogz1976 · 25/08/2021 19:37

Do you have a spare room you could let out?
Re the dog, check out Borrow My Doggy - it connects dog owners with people who dont own a dog but would like to take care of one/take it for walks.

SpacePotato · 25/08/2021 19:39

If you did sell stuff you don't have to use the post office.
You could use hermes or similar that have drop off shops open late or drop boxes (like lockers) near you.

Emma2021 · 25/08/2021 19:57

Couple of points.
Move to a better paid position. Alternatively and the easy one IMO and as another MN member stated, do some private tuition, loads of money.

Then, spend money you have and always pay off the cc without incurring interest and never borrow money other than to buy a property and/or business.

thanks

I wouldn’t sell on eBay if I were you. I do as part of my job and it’s time consuming but profitable.
Look at passive income streams. For short term things like surveys and focus groups can add up nicely £40-£100 a month I find and I don’t work at it.
E books, printables.
I think tutoring would be your best bet if you can fit it in, you could just do holiday tutoring (I am aware teachers work in the hols but the workload is less)
It would be worth selling items you no longer need on eBay but maybe list them so they will be posted when it’s school hols.

Online banking can also do this?

How many bank accounts and subscriptions did you have Confused

bookish83 · 27/08/2021 07:33

The post office near me is open til 10 as it is in a corner shop. You could also list ypur items to finish on a thurs and then post on a sat morning.

Could you do a month where you live on very little and use that to try and get out of your overdraft? Or reduce it by £100 each month?

Sign up to research companies too. They pay well if you fit their specific brief- not the online surveys, the hours interview type places

Life admin day one weekend and review your bills, get cashback for switching via Quidco etc.

I don't mean to sound judgy with this but how did you not know!? I could not lose £150 per month and not know where it was going...
Northernsoullover · 27/08/2021 07:37

Do you have a large sports stadium near you (rugby or football) I've just applied for a stewards position. You only work games and concerts so fairly regularly but not every weekend.

Returnoftheowl · 27/08/2021 07:55

Another vote for tutoring here!
