Why does my car do this?

You know how the petrol pump handle clicks to tell you the tank is full? With this car it often clicks instantly. It's a Prius Plus hybrid. I've never had this problem with any previous car. It meanies filling the tank a real pain. Why does this happen?

You’re pushing the nozzle in too far, creating a vacuum.

Aren't you supposed to push it in as far as possible, to reduce loss through vapour? Isn't that what the plastic baffle is for?

No.

My new car does this as well but it’s full petrol. I go in with an empty tank and it clicks off after £1 of petrol and then every 20p or so after that, drives me absolutely crazy as my car holds £55 worth of petrol. No other car I have owned or filled with fuel has ever done this.

It’s the Venturi Effect.

My mini does this ! It’s a pain what I do now is only press the pump as gentle as possible and it seems to work ok x

I have tried holding the nozzle in different positions, including not all the way in. Yesterday a petrol station employee was working around the pumps and I asked him. When he tried holding the nozzle not pushed in all the way he ended up spilling petrol down the side of my car!
