If you’re nervous about public speaking?

Curious if people would pay for a course to help them boost their confidence and overcome their nerves. Particularly if they needed to do presentations for work, or if it was holding them back in some way.

I keep putting myself down for the in-work training and then bottling out Sad

I think it would be a very good idea to do it!

My DH hates it. I do it for a living. Our D's does public speaking lessons to ensure he isn't like DH because it really sucks to be like DH about this. £15 a week, plus exam fees etc.

I'm not sure you can ever get over the fear, and actually if you do it means you're blasé. The only thing to do is practice and force yourself to it. It might be better to focus on general presentation skills so you know you can do it, rather than confidence building.

Thanks. I’m no expert in it but have struggled for years with it, holding back in jobs and avoiding certain situations. Finally through a mix of CBT, personally funded training and age/experience, I’ve come to terms with it.

I’d really like to set up a few informal training courses, more as a sideline to my main job really, like the odd workshop here and there. I feel quite passionate (overused word I know!) about it.
Where I live, there doesn’t seem to be much on offer, just some horrendously expensive corporate and American sounding courses for ‘businesspeople’….

I've seen courses for this advertised.

No idea how many people take them up, but it's a very good idea.

I think you're right that fear of public speaking can really hold people back, and the more important it is to overcome it, the harder it becomes.

I was trained many years ago. Being able to stand up and feel confident about addressing a crowd whether it be colleagues or strangers is a valuable asset and boosts confidence in other areas of your life where you have to speak and feel confident about doing so.

lannistunnut you should go for the in house training. If others are signing up, they’ll be feeling the same way as you! It’s also okay to be nervous .. we all feel like we have to put on a front about feeling great about public speaking but so few people actually enjoy it.

I know, it is just it'll be grim and avoidance is such an effective tactic Grin

Ha! Been there myself and bought a market stall of tshirts. Maybe go out for a drink with the nice ones afterwards - might be a bonding experience 😁
