Is anyone here non-binary and prepared to describe it to me?

Just that

I would like to understand

As far as I can see, it is not wanting to be bothered with male or female stereotypes, and mostly affects girls

It seems to me that it is a political decision, so I am confused at the terminology "come out as non-binary" as I think "come out" means be open about your sexuality, not explain that you have made a political decision

Is it like being very feminist?

Thank you in advance for any answers

Surely we're all (or nearly all) non binary?
I dont think of myself as entirely feminine. Or very feminine at all. But I am female. So presumably I'm non binary.

Is it like being very feminist?

No, its nothing like being very feminist. Feminists actually do real world stuff like campaign around laws, or run women's shelters, or fundraise.

but feminists argue for equality, and non-binary people say we are all equal, and there is no difference in being male or female - is that right?

So its like being feminist, except more so?

Pretty sure I fall under the NHS definition, although I am not clear if I need to identify as this for any reason. It does at least explicitly say that masculinity and femininity are/may be important aspects of whether one feels (and therefore is) male or female, which I have my own views on.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/gender-dysphoria/ :

Gender identity refers to our sense of who we are and how we see and describe ourselves.

Most people identify as "male" or "female". These are sometimes called "binary" identities.

But some people feel their gender identity is different from their biological sex.

For example, some people may have male genitals and facial hair but do not identify as a male or feel masculine.

Some may have female genitals and breasts but do not identify as a female or feel feminine.

Some people do not define themselves as having a "binary" identity. For them the concept of gender is not relevant to their identity.

They may use different terms, such as agender, gender diverse, gender non-conforming, to describe their identity. However, as a group, they are often called "non-binary".

In my son’s friend, it means ‘six foot three, wears a hair bobble and likes to be called ‘they’’. Otherwise a perfectly normal slightly shy sort of a chap, really. I have no idea what practical effect it has on everyday life.

Thelnebriati · 24/08/2021 22:47

No. Feminists say that men and women are different sexes, and it matters when sex differences mean one sex is at a disadvantage compared to the other.
It doesn't matter at times when its not an issue and neither sex is at a disadvantage.

So for example, sports are usually a sex affected activity; men and women compete in different categories for reasons of safety and fairness. Non binary sportspeople would compete in the class for their sex and ability.

StarryStarrySocks · 24/08/2021 22:48

Oh God not you again. Is this for a KS3 module too?

Feminists don't believe in gender stereotypes. You are either male or female. What you wear is about your personality, nothing more, and not actually important in the scheme of things.

Non binaries do believe in gender stereotypes and believe they are special because they don't adhere to feminine or masculine stereotypes. They are still either female or male at the end of the day.

Instead of rejecting a gender label for themselves and enforcing one on everyone else, it would make much more sense to agree that gender is a load of bollocks and no one should be expected to behave or dress in a certain way. But then they wouldn't be special. In truth everyone knows they are a she or a he - it's innate for us to spot someone's sex - and has to go to great lengths to play along with their pronoun games.

Thelnebriati · 24/08/2021 23:16

'Non binary' is a misnomer;
Binary------Non binary.
is itself a binary.

People confuse sex and gender. Sex is biological; 'gender' is a set of expectations society places on people based on their sex. Gender isn't real. If it was, then gender roles would be consistent in different cultures and throughout history.

Sex is real. Humans are a sexually dimorphic species, adult males and females have noticeably different physical characteristics.
There is no spectrum for sex. >99% of humans are either male or female. If you are fertile or infertile, it is irrelevant to your sex class. Your personality, likes and dislikes, clothing choices and hair length are irrelevant to your sex class.

It's a fad in teens and pre teens. However women who don't want to be labelled woman. Or no breast feeding anymore as it highlights breasts. So chest feeding Confused
I'm a feminist and believe we are born our gender. However I do not say my dd can't play football as she is a girl etc. I called my mum out other week for telling a 4 year old nephew that only girls carry ballsAngry

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/08/2021 23:26

I’m a feminist and know we are born our sex. It’s a matter of fact not belief or opinion.

ElliottSmithsfingers · 24/08/2021 23:35

Non binary people are people that believe in traditional gender stereotypes and think they are special and different for not conforming to the stereotype. They appear to have swallowed whole a point of view which is very old fashioned and at least partially obsolete for most of the population (in the West anyway). In reality 99.9% are just chronic attention seekers. The best way to deal with them is to ignore and not pander to them.

Are you writing this whilst on your break in A&E?
