How do I stop my mattress stinking of pee?

What the title says.

My kid has just started school this week so obviously things have been a bit emotional. 2 nights ago she came through to our room crying in the middle of the night so I shuffled along and let her climb in and sleep with us. We’re not long back from holiday so I’ve been doing all of the laundry (why didn’t I do it before we left?!) so of course our mattress protector hadn’t dried enough before we went to bed and I just put a sheet on “until tomorrow”.

Obviously my darling precious firstborn then proceeded to do the most enormous piss in the bed. What’s more she is an active sleeper and had turned a full 180 degrees in the bed by the time she picked her moment, so there’s a puddle at the pillow end.

What can I do to get rid of the stink? I’ve sprinkled with bicarb and hoovered it up - didn’t work. I’ve sprayed with carpet cleaner and worked it in properly (thinking it got the dogs pee out the carpets when she was a puppy) - made only the tiniest difference. The windows are wide open, the room is airing out. We’re sleeping on the futon in the living room.

Help, oh wise women of Mumsnet!

Tbh you'll probably need a new matress if what you've done already hasnt shifted it...

Sorry

Not sure why her urine should smell so strongly at a young age but try the pet urine destroyer available from pets at home.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/08/2021 17:52

Steam cleaner might help, the steam can penetrate further than bicarb etc.

Bicarbonate soda should work, or you sure there's no urine infection if it smells very strong.

FlorenceNightshade · 24/08/2021 18:00

Does it actually still stink or can you just smell it because you know it’s there? Do you have an independent third party who can do a sniff test????

Guineapigbridge · 24/08/2021 18:03

Urine shouldn't smell that bad. I'm with the others, are you sure she hasn't got an infection?

I think her urine js super concentrated because she’s not been drinking at school, she comes home with about 1cm drunk out of her water bottle.

Wet area with vinager leave for 20 mins to soak in then pour a whole container of bicarbonate on it and leave for a day.
At the end of the day, vaccine up the bicarb.

Rubyupbeat · 24/08/2021 18:16

'Urine off' it's for dogs but works just as well for human wee. It's really good stuff.
Get it on Amazon.

MallardtheKing · 24/08/2021 18:19

Look up urine enzyme cleaners, you can get pet ones as mentioned by PPs but also ones designed for human urine too, they're used in care homes for example. You need to use lots to really soak the area but it should work.

mobear · 24/08/2021 18:20

I agree with pp, new mattress.

You may as well try the urine cleaners. .If they really don't work , get a new mattress if possible try and dry mattress outside in the sun.

poopyface · 24/08/2021 18:38

Do all the above and flip it so it’s at the other end?

DolphinDreams · 24/08/2021 20:45

Ok, you asked. You can get a new mattress or:

  • first wash stain with soapy (dishwasher liquid) water. Blot.
  • then spray/splash some hydrogen peroxide on. Blot.
  • then vinegar. Blot.
  • then saturate the wet stain with bicarbonate and let it all dry - if possible, in the sun. Or train a fan on the stain.
  • then vacumn up the bicarb.
  • and then leave the mattress in the sun if at all possible.

The anti-pet urine sprays do work, but I found the smell of them worse than the smell of the pee Confused.

Good luck OP!

Bimblesalong · 24/08/2021 20:50

You might be able to get someone out to clean it. Our local carpet and rug cleaners advertise that they clean mattresses as well.

muffindays · 24/08/2021 20:53

get some bicarb, leave it a few days. And febreeze to take the edge off it!

muffindays · 24/08/2021 20:53

Could you leave it outside for a day or two to air out?
