Teapot- what am I doing wrong?

MrsRobbieHart · 23/08/2021 20:18

I always make my tea in a mug. I had occasion recently to take a flask with me for a few days and make tea in the car. Same tea bags as always, same milk. I put boiling water in the flask and made the tea in the cup like I would at home. The tea was delicious and catapulted me right back to my youth and the tea my mum made in her stainless steel tea pot. So I’ve gone today and bought myself a stainless steel tea pot. Brewed it on the hob. But it doesn’t taste like it did from the flask or from my childhood. Sad what have I done wrong?

Maybe the teapot needs breaking in? Not sure how.

Always use fresh water, don't boil twice.

MrsRobbieHart · 23/08/2021 20:21

I wondered about the tannins. I’m sure they have something to do with it. But there won’t have been tannins in my flask. Just boiled water.

One tea bag for each person and one for the pot

It was just me having tea so I had 2 bags in the pot. It just tasted the same as when I make it in the mug. Maybe I need to drink it out of my flask cup? Grin

Are you boiling the teapot on the hob instead of rinsing the teapot with hot water, putting the teabags in followed by boiling water and letting it steep before pouring?

Etinox · 23/08/2021 20:26

You brewed it on the hob?!
Add boiling water to the teapot with 2 teabags in it, leave to brew for 4/5 mins and pour.

MrsRobbieHart · 23/08/2021 20:26

I didn’t rinse the teapot with hot water. I just put two teabags in and poured the kettle in. Let it sit on the ring on under it for a few minutes until I hear it making sounds then pour into cup.

Ok so no brewing on the hob?

You put a teapot on the hob?!

BigRedBoat · 23/08/2021 20:32

Have you bought a tea pot or a stovetop kettle? Teapots are usually ceramic, you put the teabags in, fill it with freshly billed water and leave to brew for 5 mins, then pour into a mug and add milk. A stovetop kettle is for boiling the water to put on the teabags in the teapot or mug not for making the tea in.

No brewing on the hob, I think that’s where you’re going wrong x

Divebar2021 · 23/08/2021 20:33

You put the tea pot on the hob? I have never heard of that. I would warm the pot with hot water while the kettle boils , tip out, add the tea bags and then the boiling water.

Generally no. I do know people who do this but it will affect the flavour.

Also just rinse the teapot out with plain water when you finish, don't wash it with soapy water, it needs to build up a patina of tea.

And loose tea leaves are better than bags IMHO.

MrsRobbieHart · 23/08/2021 20:34

It’s a teapot. One specifically for the hob with a thicker base. Growing up- everyone always brewed their pot on the hob. It’s this one

Teapot doesn't go on a hob. Just pour in your boiling water with two teabags. Leave it to brew for five minutes. Then pour. Enjoy ☕

choli · 23/08/2021 20:35

Let it sit on the ring on under it for a few minutes until I hear it making sounds then pour into cup.
Sitting with the ring on under it is the issue.

HarrisMcCoo · 23/08/2021 20:36

Fair enough MrsRobbieHart🤦🏻 must be a new one I am not familiar with. I just have a traditional ceramic one.

WeAreTheHeroes · 23/08/2021 20:36

Where did everyone brew tea on the hob? I have never heard of it before, and I remember the days when you always made tea in a pot.

MrsRobbieHart · 23/08/2021 20:36

Yes I think it must be the hob. I could have bought a bloody cheaper pot then! Grin

In their kitchens? Wink

No. You boiled the kettle on the hob, then poured it into the teapot.

Why does that thing even exist?? Teapot = pot tea brews in. Kettle = thing you boil the water in before you pour it over the tea bags you've put in the teapot. I've never seen anything do both, and i speak as someone who has never really drunk tea made in a mug unless it's someone else who's made it for me and I'm being mega polite in drinking it.

Yes, I am a tea snob, and no, I will never change.

MrsRobbieHart · 23/08/2021 20:39

Nope. We boiled the kettle from the socket in the wall.

DontDoThatGeorge · 23/08/2021 20:41

You could try boiling just water on the hob, in the weird teapot and then chucking some bags in?

But that's basically a large mug 😂

MrsRobbieHart · 23/08/2021 20:43

😂

I will tomorrow and report back.
