Most unreasonable complaints from fellow holiday makers?

I'm currently on holiday in UK, on a special interest trip. I've done one similar holiday before, most of the other guests have done loads. A mixture of single people and couples, mostly middle aged plus.

We're accommodated in the sort of place that usually does school trips and whilst often these holiday are in nice hotels, the brochure/ website was very clear that this was basic accommodation and catering and the location was the main reason for using the base. It was also cheaper than these holidays usually are.

I'm having a nice time. The group leader is good, the cente staff are helpful, my room is indeed basic but it's clean and comfortable and has a good shower. The food has been "get what you're given" with a choice only between meat or vegetarian and it's simple home cooking, not restaurant quality, but there's plenty of it and it's been fine IMO.

TBH, it's all exactly what I was expecting from the website - except for the moaning of the other guests.

This is apparently by far the worst trip they've ever done, the food is awful, the rooms terrible etc etc. And yes, they are if you're comparing to a four star hotel, but that was never what this was going to be.

I'm now MNetting in my room rather than in the very confortable, if shabby, common room because I can't listen to any more of it!

Have others shared holidays with complaining guests when you thought it was fine?

I was at a local attraction today. Ther person next to me in the ice cream queue was complaining about the size of the car park (too big). It is a bit of a trek... but the car park is that size to accommodate the number of cars of visitors.

On my once in a lifetime trip we stayed at the most amazing hotel I have ever stayed in, food was lovely and plentiful, drinks were included, rooms wonderful and the kindest most helpful staff.
I'm not the type of person who usually stays at hotels with a personal butler.
And yet none of this was the main attraction 🦒🦒
There was an older gentleman who, very loudly, slated everything, suite too small, food sub par, washing took 3 hours to come back but worst of all he was so rude to the amazing staff, wanted to know how much they earned and all the other guests, shouted "oi"to get attention. Also thought he should be first to be served at all times as he had the most money. Just rude.

When they complain they can't get the ferry across the harbour.

When the tide is out and the boats are literally sat on sand Grin

Some people take comfort in misery. I swear, there are some people who just love to find something to complain about. It’s just a speciality of theirs. Maybe they are those people.

I once went on holiday to Iceland. Beautiful country, lovely holiday. When I was looking up some stuff, I found a bad review of a hotel where the guy was complaining that the hot water smelled of sulphur.

Erm, I'm sure 99% of hot water in Iceland smells of sulphur! This guy clearly hadn't done any basic research.

The marmalade isn't up to scratch 😕

OpalOwl: we stayed at a 4 star hotel on a voucher, and during the obligatory time share pitch, we pointed out that while the hotel was lovely, some of the guests were the very vilest nooves imaginable. Snapping fingers, addressing staff as "you!", dissatisfaction with everything.

I went to a fat camp.

The whining started from the get go. Different people were complaining about different things.

Portions were too small (!), there was too much emphasis on resistance exercises, the starts were too early, there was no coffee or tea allowed (caffeine not allowed), the walks were too long, it was too muddy, it rained, it was too sunny and best of all - they made us do exercise.

We had paid thousands to be there and we had to sign waivers and disclaimers to get on the coach. They couldn't not have known what a 7 day weight loss boot camp in the middle of nowhere meant.

The terms and conditions were in black and white from the moment you put your credit card details in.

That the sunset over the sea was rubbish compared with other holidays.
In Scarborough.
On the EAST coast.
PS. Some of our sunRISES are amazing!

Amazing hotel in the tropics in the middle of a rain forest...
Trip advisor complaints about the dusk chorus of insects, it was noisy, but so exotic.

We go on dive boats for a week at a time and I can spot our fellow passengers at check in. They’re always the ones moaning at the airline staff that although they haven’t precooked extra legroom seats and are double the luggage allowance, they don’t see why they can’t get what they want.

On the boats people complain about rough sea crossings, windy weather, too hot/too cold, presence/absence of various sea creatures - none of which anyone has any control over. My favourite was ‘oh god, not ANOTHER dive at (world famous amazing dive site area). That’s what they’d come on the bloody trip for.

There’s always at least one on a boat and a week is plenty long enough.

Very posh expensive holiday cottage had a dead frog in the swimming pool, insisted that someone come and remove it and deliver them a complimentary hamper by way of apology.
Ridiculous!

Holidays abroad:

  • 'They don't even speak English propa' (spelt like that on purpose)
  • 'Its all foreign muck! Nothing English on the menu!'
  • 'They don't even have a menu in English its all foreign!'

A hotel guest getting arsey with the rep because the airport was closed due to snow and what was she going to do about it.

Rep was so upset we bought her a bottle of gin Smile

This TripAdvisor review of Scafell Pike cracks me up every time. Not sure what they were expecting to be honest:

"We took the route from Great Langdale. It was horrible! I'm happy I did it and it was rewarding, but I would never do it again, ever! The paths are not marked and even though we had a map, we still managed to get lost doing extra 1.5h through some pikes and hills we didn't plan to see. It took us about 7h in total. The hike is really tough, very far away from a pleasurable mountain trek. The weather was nice at the beginning, later on it was raining and it was quite cold. We had to walk pretty fast as we didn't want to finish the walk in complete darkness. It's very steepy, very rocky and really hard. You don't really admire the views around you as you need to stay focus and watch your steps. At the summit spectacular views didn't greet us, just a lot of clouds and nothing else. Again, I'm happy I did it, I really wanted to do it, but I wouldn't do it again..."

There was too much Chinese food.

We were on a tour of China…

I moved to a seaside town in the SW. People from my home city (and other places) write to the local paper saying they won't come again due to the traffic jams.

Firstly we don't have traffic jams without the holiday makers so they are complaining about something they cause.

Secondly I used to live in their city and the traffic jams are 10 or 20 times worse than they ever are here.

Holidaying in Norway. "There's no snow! I thought there would be snow!"

It was June.

I have never been able to understand this mentality? What exactly do people expect when they visit another country?

You could have bought her a shovel. Grin

We stayed at a stunning agriturismo in Italy, which was on a buffalo farm. At dinner we had the freshest buffalo mozzarella, and our fellow guests were complaining that it wasn't very good as it wasn't like what they buy at the supermarket. Idiots.

BadlyArrangedToasties · 23/08/2021 21:23

My relative is a ranger at an American national park. One camper complained that a deer ran off with a bag of pickles and demanded compensation. Another complained the hills were too steep and suggested they install an escalator.

BigRedFrog · 23/08/2021 21:40

On holiday in a fabulous hotel in Jamaica with so much choice of food at the hotel that it was eye popping.
English couple complained that they couldn't find anything worth eating and just ate crackers and cheese every meal.
In Turkey a bloke was complaining that they weren't showing a rugby league final match on the TV anywhere. Well no, they don't even know what bloody rugby league is, beside the fact that they'd need a satellite dish the size of a small country to get it.
