The Magic of Sprite - what is this witchcraft? (TW for emetophobes)

Ive felt rough since I woke up this morning- nauseated and bloated. Anyway, was wfh but felt so droopy I had to get on the sofa with my laptop, and thought “wow I feel shocking”. Within mins I was doing that special kind of intense vomiting that makes you certain you are going to die. Imminently.

This went on until mid afternoon, so called DM to pick up DS from nursery as couldn’t make it out of the house and am LP so, it was that or he slept there. I could still barely drag myself upright from the bathroom floor when she brought him home at 6.

BUT DM brought with my child (it was lovely to see him too) a large sprite with extra ice, shaken to take the fizz out. She swore it would cure me. And oh my god. It might be a bit soon to say, but after 8 hours of not even being able to keep water down, retching my empty stomach up over the loo, it’s like a magic potion.

How does this work? DOES this work? The fact I’m able to type this suggests some effect(have just been wilting and puking until 15 mins ago)? Or am I about to be severely punished by the gods of Gastrointestinal Upset for my foolishness?

If you don’t hear from me again, it was obviously an error of judgement *

My DM swears by flat full fat coke to kill the stomach bug.

Sprite update:
Have drunk half and not chucked.
Well enough to sit up and talk to DM, rather than lie groaning on floor.
It’s a soda pop miracle!

Shaken to take the fizz out?

Normally I shake a bottle of pop to increase the fizz, and remove the top and leave it to remove the fizz.

@JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue

Yes exactly. You shake it up then release the lid... goes flat super fast.

My parents used to give us flat coke when we were ill or after we'd been swimming at the lake. I haven't had Sprite since they started adding artificial sweeteners a few years ago. The phase with the Stevia was awful 🤮

I have always sworn by doctor 7up. Warmed up or shaken to remove bubbles it helps every time I have used it on my kids for the last 19 years. My GP once said it had the minerals to help rehydrate. No idea if it's true but it is a miracle cure

stupiduser · 23/08/2021 20:03

It also has to be full fat, not diet

Elieza · 23/08/2021 20:08

Flat full sugar coke here too.

lachy · 23/08/2021 20:17

My DM always gave us flat lemonade if we were
being sick.

If we were really unwell she'd warm it up, stick a pinch of salt in it and force it down us 🤮 Its not pleasant but worked every time. It's to do with replacing lost sugars and salts.

Nowadays I just swig from a bottle of lucozade.

isthismylifenow · 23/08/2021 20:26

Yes it's a thing. I think the sugar (and other additives) act as electrolytes.

My mum would put a bit of salt in as well, think this doubled as as getting salt in the system, but it also gets the fizz out fast.

Glad you are feeling better OP.

The Irish swear by flat 7Up. Same lemon & lime thing. It has to be full fat, though.
