What every day things can we all do to help the environment?

I’ve really been paying attention to the worsening climate crisis recently, and want to do my bit to help.

I’ve reduced my single use plastic consumption, and will be using my car less.

But what every day things can we do to help more?

Plant based diet, drop meat, dairy and fish totally, or as much as you're able to. Makes a huge difference.

I eat mainly vegetarian anyway, and am intolerant to dairy, but could definitely make more effort with plant based. Does plant based not use more environmental resources though?

Teach the kids to cycle, walk and use the bus, and make it normal to do so.

Don't use black binbags for your recycling.

Buy less. Cycle more.

I don’t have to worry about my kids, as they are 17 and 21. We live rurally, so rely on the car quite a bit. There isn’t any public transport here.

Use more eco friendly cleaning products. If you have a garden grow insect friendly plants. Buy second hand clothes etc and pass on unwanted stuff.

Guineapigbridge · 24/08/2021 09:13

Line your bin with paper or simply wash it out, instead of using a bin liner.

Buy less.

Avoid over-packaged products like juice cartons with little straws or tiny chippy packets or packs of biscuits in plastic trays Angry

Guineapigbridge · 24/08/2021 09:14

Use washable panty liners instead of those awful plastic ones.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 24/08/2021 09:15

Write to your mp. Write to supermarkets and ask them to use less plastic.

Orgasmagorical · 24/08/2021 09:16

Don't buy anything you don't need.

Sorry, but there have been so many threads on this lately... including: Would anyone be interested in trying to do one small thing each week to tackle climate change?

Also read ebooks or library books and magazines, use bars of soap to wash hands and hair, and bars of washing up detergent instead of buying plastic bottles. Buy second hand. Use flannels instead of wipes, refill jars for herbs, coffee etc at Zero Waste shops. Wash on 30. Switch to renewable energy tariffs. Following someone for inspiration helps, I like EcoSal's website.

Pressure China and those type of countries into stopping so much carbon admissions...

I'm sorry to say but our little bits of environmental friendly will do nothing unless the big countries change alongside.

LavendulaAngustifolia · 24/08/2021 09:26

Move your money out of the banks who invest in fossil fuels (almost all the high street banks)

They only make so many emissions to make the stuff we buy. It is the consumers of the West that are addicted to buying cheaper products that are causing this.

Not every day but go plant some trees. There may be a local initiative near you to join.

That’s great OP! I’m the same! Little things I’ve done:

  • cycle everywhere. Hardly use the car (we live in a city though so easier)
  • cut down meat and fish consumption. Smaller portions when we do have it and local butcher meat
  • no cling film etc beeswax wraps or mini Tupperware used for storage/lunchboxes
  • eco friendly cleaning stuff (method, eco etc)
  • buying more second hand. I wasn’t great for this tbh but I’ve been a lot better recently. Also I clean down etc all DCs old toys/stuff/clothes and hand down to friends/charity shop/FB marketplace. Chuck a lot less
  • trying to buy less plastic generally. I will get plastic toys if I’ve researched them and they look a good investment for both kids but no tat
  • books for gifts for DC friends birthdays
I’m trying to find little new ways to help all the time so I’ll be keeping an eye on the thread for Inspo. Makes me feel better about the awful situation that I’m trying to do something to help!
