What cars are good for short drivers?

My daughter is almost 17 and looking to get her first car.
She is 4'11" tall.
Know it's more an issue of driving position than actual car size, my MIL couldn't drive a mini metro because she couldn't find a position to see out without booster cushions and then couldn't reach the pedals). but can anyone recommend a small engine car with not too much legroom? Thank you

I don't know if this will help but I'm 5'1" and I drive a Smart for Two - she may prefer a four-seater. Big windows so there's good vision but - I still need a booster cushion.

Derrymum123 · 23/08/2021 14:02

Smart for four. Love mine.

TheFairyCaravan · 23/08/2021 14:04

DDIL is 5’. She’s got an Audi A1 and she drives DS2’s VW Polo.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 23/08/2021 14:13

I'm 4'11" and the only car I struggled with was a Mini! My Honda FRV has a height adjustable seat which goes far enough forward that I don't need it all the way forward to comfortably operate the pedals. I imagine the Jazz would probably have the same feature.

Battleofwhocouldcareless · 23/08/2021 14:14

I'm 4'11" and drive a Nissan Note and a Toyota Verso 7 seater (know that's not what she wants), so as you say it's not car size. I can't reach the pedals in Ford's, have to use a booster cushion. I learnt in a Kia Picante which has a small engine and great for smaller legs.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I'm not sure a Smart is in her budget but might be a fun test drive!

DH thinks. Hyundai i10 would be a good first car for her. He drives a Hyundai already. Does anyone have any experience of more affordable cars for petites?
Thanks

Fiat 500. My two girls are 5ft2" and both fit really well inside. Made for Italians! (I can say that as I am one). They are really popular round here as they look good too Grin.

PleasantBirthday · 23/08/2021 15:39

I have a Fiat Panda and it is perfect for my size.

LadyDanburysHat · 23/08/2021 15:42

VWs are definitely good as you can crank the seat up high. That is really the most important thing, adjustable seat height. Any car without, or with limited adjustment will be no good for her.

afaloren · 23/08/2021 15:42

My mum is that height and swears by Ford Fiesta. She’s driven them all my life. When I drive her car I feel like Noddy!

OverTheWater · 23/08/2021 15:43

In the 00s I drove a Hyundai i10 and a daihatsu charade. Both good little cars and cheap to run. I am average and found them cramped so probably a good sign? As long as the newer models aren't significantly bigger, anyway.

OverTheWater · 23/08/2021 15:43

Oh wait they don't sell daihatsu in the UK any more. Shame!

mildlymiffed · 23/08/2021 15:45

I'm 5"2. I used to drive a Kia picanto (now have a larger Kia). I like the picanto as you could really hoik the seat up!

Muminabun · 23/08/2021 15:45

I am 5”6” and a ka was too small for me

spicetime · 23/08/2021 15:47

Ironically I actually often find larger cars easier as they tend to have adjustable seats and steering wheels.
But most cars where the seat and the wheel move are really adjustable for height so I would look for that.

spicetime · 23/08/2021 15:48

I also found a fiat panda fitted well.

Pinklemons52 · 23/08/2021 15:55

I’m 5 2 - I love my audit A1. I’ve been able to push the seat forward in other cars but this one feels more made for my size and would be ok for slightly shorter too I think.

Chunkymenrock · 23/08/2021 15:56

Toyota Yaris or Aygo worth a try. My niece and I are 4'11 and have these. I must stress, it's best for her to try a good few cars. Just because the car is small doesn't necessarily mean it will be any good for a short driver. It's a balance between seat forward/back, raised up/down and steering wheel moved up/down. Sometimes the dashboard moulding is too high up and obstructive to vision no matter what you do.

I'm passionate about getting it right. It's vital for safety and take your time adjusting everything possible to see how good you can get it. Check that the seat belt mounting moves low enough too, and that when the optimum seat position is achieved, the handbrake isn't behind the seat! (Has happened to me-cars designed by men, for men...Hmm)

Tomnooktoldmeto · 23/08/2021 15:59

I’m 4’11’ with very short legs and drive a Corsa happily, I also drive a B class Mercedes but need to wear trainers as my feet are only a size 3 and I need the extra size to fully engage with the peddles

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/08/2021 16:00

The Ford Ka is good - I feel like I'm 6feet tall in mine. We also have a Ford Focus and it feels much lower.

purdypuma · 23/08/2021 18:59

I have an 11 plate mini with height adjustable seats & I'm 5"4

Andrew2020 · 23/08/2021 19:19

I drive a Hyundai Kona and an 5’2” - would not recommend this one as I find it hard to get comfortable, despite adjustable seats etc

ODFOx · 23/08/2021 21:18

These are so helpful. Thank you very much!

All cars these days have seats that move up and down as well as backwards and forwards.

I'm 5'1" and drive a Passat......

Bluebiscuits · 23/08/2021 21:30

I'm 5'4 and drive a Hyundai i10 but not sure I would recommend it. To reach the pedals I feel I have to have my seat far forward and really close to the steering wheel, and the pedals are quite high and not in the comfiest position. I have short legs though so it might suit her better!
