Please can you give me your top tips? We have two primary aged kids, 3 cats and a lot of stuff to move! Thanks 😊

Hire packers, it’s worth it.

AlphabetAerobics · 23/08/2021 15:49

Send the kids to the grandparents for a few days.

Buy gin.

We are meant to be moving house soon. I would suggest:

-cats to the Cattery so they don’t get stressed out or go wandering
-pack a minimum of a box a day (more if possible)
-some removal companies provide boxes and wardrobe boxes. I vote go with professional removal company
-bin stuff as you go, no point in shifting tut to the house. So lots of charity shops and tip runs
-children at school, nursery or grandparents
-booze and snacks!

@EL8888 my cats have never been to a cattery. I was planning to keep them in the ensuite bathroom while all the packing happens and then put them in their box for the 5min drive to the new place and then leave them alone in a room in new place. Is there likely to be a significant amount of time when we are 'between' houses?

@KindergartenKop it varies a lot l fear. Are you going into an empty or occupied property? Reason why l ask is some people are very slow up vacate. A friend of mine arrived at her new house they had bought, to find the then ex owners decanting a 3 storey house into 2 hatchback cars. This obviously took forever Confused. Friend movers nearly charged extra for hours of hanging around and friend with her husband had to help them to speed up the process

KindergartenKop · 23/08/2021 20:05

@EL8888 The people we are buying from moved to Wales a few months ago but the house is still furnished. So I imagine they'll move it all out before the big day.

If you put the cats in the en-suite be careful they don’t destroy the flooring trying to escape and that you put a big sign on the door to remind everyone not to go in. And shit the bedroom door over when you go in to capture them so they don’t escape and bolt on moving day.

Start binning stuff now. My charity shops got a maximum number of donations bags they take per day so it would take a while to get shot of a lot of stuff, so start now if yours is the same!

Completely empty a small room the night before and stash the dcats in there until the last trip..

Roselilly36 · 23/08/2021 20:11

We moved with a baby, toddler, a dog & three cats. Keep the cats & dog shut in an empty room whilst removers are clearing the property, DH left in his car with the removers with the toddler and dog, , I took baby and the cats once I had done the final bits of cleaning. Good luck OP, it’s only one day don’t let it stress you.

Following for advice! Also moving (hopefully soon) with a toddler and a baby…

KindergartenKop · 23/08/2021 20:15

We took 3 bags to the charity shop today!
I'm seriously considering the cattery. Do they mind it? Would it be less stressful for them?

I put my cats in the downstairs toilet on moving day, i put them in their carriers just as the movers were finished loading the vans, at the new house we had the keys but i put them outside in a quiet area that i could see while the movers got everything unloaded, as soon as the utility room was sorted a let them out in there with a feliway plug in, their beds etc while we got on with everything else.
Our daughter was in school and after school club on moving day. We stopped unpacking at pick up and resumed the next day while she was in school

Toddlerteaplease · 23/08/2021 20:20

Definitely put the cats in a cattery. They'll be fine and you won't need to worry about them.

Twospaniels · 23/08/2021 20:23

Cats in a cattery, kids to relatives, get the removers to do the packing sooooo worth the money

Svalberg · 23/08/2021 20:51

We put the cat in a locked bedroom. She dug up the carpet trying to get out. We then couldn't open the door to get in there. All the windows were locked to keep her in. It took a couple of hours to push the door in and we eventually had together the room recapped. Yet more stress added to a stressful day.

Svalberg · 23/08/2021 20:51

Recarpeted, not recapped!

spicychickenwing · 23/08/2021 20:53

Go through each room the loft and garage in the coming weeks. Much easier to pack when you aren't sorting as well. It also means you can give someone a stack of boxes and a room and tell them to pack it up. If you get the garage cleared out you can start to fill with packing boxes as you pack the stuff you dont use in the days before.

Have a glut of marker pens scissors and a tape gun! Makes building the boxes much easier. I am also a big fan of jumbo laundrette/laundry/shopping bags that zip. I put everyones duvet and pillows in one on moving day. Also brilliant for emptying airing cupboard into. I even emptied wardrobes into them.

Pay for movers! Even if you can stretch to packers.

Ship out the kids as early as you can the day before. If you have got organised before its quite doable to pack up in 24 hours.
