Urgent gift ideas please

I want to send a gift to a man in his mid 30's who is very poorly, and very frightened as he is awaiting test results which could be devastating. If it was a female, I'd have no problem thinking of a myriad of things, but I always find it hard to buy gifts for men. So if anyone could help me with ideas it would be so much help. Criteria are:-

No alcohol

he has LOTS of books still unread and his concentration is low

I have to have it delivered direct to him as he is 150 miles away, and I am stuck at home due to health issues of my own, so I can't go shopping or post anything myself.

I'm desperate to let him know he isn't forgotten and to give him a bit of pleasure

Many thanks if you can help.

What does he like

NormallyOK · 23/08/2021 11:44

He likes gaming, but I don't know what games or game platform he has, and he doesn't have a lot of energy to do stuff

A food hamper? Or chocolates and sweets?

I think flowers work for men as well as women (though I realise not everyone will agree), especially if you go for a bright cheerful bunch of eg sunflowers.

Otherwise, food or chocs/sweets. I’d go for hotel chocolat if you want something classic. Or a box of kids sweets or outsize giant biscuits (lots of both on amazon) if you want something to more lighthearted

FelicityPike · 23/08/2021 11:57

What would you send a woman that you can’t send to a man?
I hope he gets god news.

junebirthdaygirl · 23/08/2021 12:00

Agree with the kids sweets as both my ds love those...and dh. Its nice and cheerful and sort of comforting.
Hope things work out well for your friend.

Is the illness making him mainly housebound?

Nice pair of PJs or dressing gown from M&S or John Lewis
Chocolates
Does he like hot drinks - gift pack with mug, hot choc/coffee/marshmallows etc

Need a bit more info really - how old?

She said he’s mid thirties.

Box of brownies?

cricketmum84 · 23/08/2021 12:13

There are some nice retro 80s sweet hampers on Amazon. I got my 30-something DH one for Christmas and he loved it, brought back lots of childhood memories!

Queenfreak · 23/08/2021 12:15

How about a gaming magazine subscription?
I find magazines easier to get through if I've low concentration

Vebrithien · 23/08/2021 12:16

Would something like a soft, woollen blanket be an idea? Something comforting, especially if he is ill.

Or a selection of hot chocolate, if he likes it?

TheVolturi · 23/08/2021 12:16

I'd send him a hamper full of snacky things, nice crisps, nuts and sweets, maybe coffee and biscuits too. Hope he's OK 🤞🏻

mildlymiffed · 23/08/2021 12:17

Marks and Spencer have some nice toiletries- the "balance" collection is quite a masculine scent. They do a bath oil, diffuser, hand wash, hand cream, body wash etc. I always think having a posh shower gel is a real treat (!)

So a nice shower gel and pjs?

How is he getting on with cooking? Would a "cook" voucher go down well for when he wants a treat meal?

TheVolturi · 23/08/2021 12:17

Or a voucher for Game?

SirenSays · 23/08/2021 12:19

Can you get him things for comfort if he's very poorly?

Slippers
Robe
Soft blankets or snuggie type things
A cafetiere or velvetiser or selection of nice teas if he's into hot drinks
A big comfy hoodie
A low maintenance house plant
A meal subscription service
Heated throw blanket or one of those heated massage pillows
A hamper of his favourite foods.

If you find out what kind of gaming he does we can help with more specific gifts options.

These all sound great ideasbut amything you send is going to work - by reminding him he is not alone at this time.

Men in my family do not go for sweet stuff much but love coffee making paraphernalia and beans you have to be precious with.

Apparently the whole (unnecessarily complicated) process is soothing and the equipment is long loved and admired.

Laaaaa · 23/08/2021 13:58

Hello fresh box if he likes cooking or some cook meals?

Food send food

BlueChampagne · 23/08/2021 14:07

A house plant, rather than flowers?

NormallyOK · 23/08/2021 15:22

Right - after a good look around (sadly my budget isn't huge), I've sent him a tin of biscuits with a train on the lid because I remembered he likes trains, some pillow spray to aid sleep, and some hot chocolate. All to be delivered tomorrow.

Thank you again, You've been a real help - not least because I'm stuck at home myself and it's lovely to be reminded nice people are out there

too late now but i was going to suggest a rubix cube! will keep him busy learning how to solve it, also good for anxiety!

CarrieMoonbeams · 23/08/2021 16:07

That's lovely OP, you sound like a really good friend.

The pleasure of receiving a parcel - just knowing that someone put thought and love into it - will give him a real boost I'm sure.

I hope things work out well for him, and Flowers from me to you.

NormallyOK · 23/08/2021 16:17

Thank you @CarrieMoonbeams x
