How do lunchboxes work nowadays?!

BestZebbie · 23/08/2021 10:53

My DS has just started Year 2 and has asked to take a packed lunch for the first time ever. Fine.

I always took a packed lunch to school myself - in primary school I had an indestructible hard shell plastic lunchbox with a character on the outside and a screw top flask that fitted securely in one half of it, food in the other half.

Do these hard lunchboxes still exist?
All the lunchboxes I can find in shops or online searches are soft bags with a bottle on the outside or not included - how does the lunch not get squashed in these? Don't they then get full of crumbs inside and impossible to clean after the first use, as you can't just rinse them under the tap and tea towel them dry instantly the way you can a thick plastic one? I am feeling slightly sick at the idea of a banana and then the open peel spending the day loose in one already.
I guess the alternative is a tupperware box from the kitchen cupboard, but I'm concerned my DS won't reliably be able to open and close the lid securely, so a couple of times a week all the rubbish will fall out of it everywhere after lunch. A tupperware also has the issue of being separate from a drinks bottle giving the opportunity to lose two things each day rather than one (they have to put their lunches on a trolley when they arrive instead of keeping them in a backpack on their peg).

Also - I had sandwiches and also veg sticks etc all lovingly wrapped in clingfilm every day for the 15 or so years of my education - I presume this isn't the done thing nowadays, so how do you transport sandwiches to school without them collapsing if they aren't clingfilmed up? I know you can get beeswax wrap things but don't they have the same issues of immediately getting manky and hard to clean as soon as they touch butter?

I did not realise it would be this/at all complicated (and I haven't got round to thinking about what stuff to put in it yet!).

inside the backpack I suppose? same as with lunch bag? my dc don't have 3 arms each and cycle to school, everything needs to go in the backpack.

Most 'formed' lunchboxes I've seen, wouldn't take a Warburtons bread sandwich - they are too small. (The same issue exists with toasters, not designed for Warby's bread.) Is clingfilm a big no-no now? Wow. I took clingfilm wrapped sandwiches every day for 12 years of schooling ...

LadyDanburysCane · 23/08/2021 18:44

Mine had soft lunchboxes with various lock & lock containers depending what food I was putting in that day. I included a food bag for any rubbish (eg. yogurt pots & lids) and dirty spoons. I could then empty this rubbish bag and rinse it for reuse a few times.

Small freezer packs to keep things cool and jobs a goodun.

In their bag.

Cling film is one of the worst products for the environment. It basically never breaks down.
MeredithGreyishblue · 23/08/2021 18:50

And they use the same water bottle they use all day.
Its not complicated unless you want to make it!

I’ve been looking for something old school style today for my youngest. I hate the soft ones as they’re a pain to wash - mine is okay but I’m not a kid! The bento style ones/Sistema are a pain as the sandwiches never fit and there’s nowhere to put an apple - both DDs like a big apple! We also frequently make lunches the night before and put the sandwiches and veg into small clip lock boxes. I can get four lots of those in the fridge - no room for larger boxes. I like the bamboo ones but I don’t think the youngest DD will cope with putting a silicon band back on. The search continues!

Thanks wasn't thinking of backpacks, mine are in primary aren't allowed backpacks in school.

my dc first primary school had a 'no backpack' policy which we (and most other parents) ignored.
in london where half the dc arrive by public transport or on foot anything else is just not practical and not ergonomical

This one fits big sandwiches and apples.

We have the clear reading bags /packets too - they fit into those too.
What do they take their water bottle in? Mine would lose a bottle a week if they couldn't shove it in a bag Grin

LozzaChops101 · 23/08/2021 19:24

I just have a variety of options from (mainly) Elephant Box that go in a soft insulated bag. I use them in the kitchen too so they all get used a lot. The "salad square" is good if you use square bread for sandwiches! Leakproof ones for most other things. I love them.

mafted · 23/08/2021 19:33

@purplesequins
The head is pretty strict about it,
small bags can get through but ones big enough to be useful get pointed out when the children are lining up.

@NavigatingAdolescence
There's not enough room, they have a peg for coats and a trolley for bags if the bag doesn't fit on the trolley they can't bring it.

Itstheprinciple · 23/08/2021 19:36

DD had a couple of neoprene ones (amazon) in primary. Really hard-wearing and I stuck them in the washing machine each weekend and they came up lovely. Hate smelly lunchboxes!

YerAWizardHarry · 23/08/2021 19:38

Does your child’s school not have a bin? My son has never come home with wrappers/banana peels..

mafted · 23/08/2021 19:39

@MeredithGreyishblue
We have branded book bags they only fit books in though.
Infants are given bottles that are left in school and miltoned nightly
Juniors just carry them or fit them in a lunch bag, we've lost plenty!
We usually walk or cycle to school so I carry a massive bag with all their stuff in and hand it out on the yard Hmm

GreyTV · 23/08/2021 19:39

Wondering what kind of school sends primary school kids home with their banana skin and not encouraging kids to throw their rubbish in the bin/recycle when they’ve finished? I know ours does but didn’t think that wasn’t the norm?

mafted · 23/08/2021 19:40

YerAWizardHarry · 23/08/2021 19:42

@mafted are you in England? I’m a teacher in Scotland and been in lots of schools on supply/on placements and never heard of a rule like that! I guess it makes sense if children are hiding any eating habits?

Good grief! That's ridiculous of them!

I do think some schools lose their grip on reality at times!

gogohm · 23/08/2021 19:46

Mine had sandwiches in the containers from Chinese takeaways which I washed each night, if went inside a soft lunch bag, they had cartons of smoothie or juice

TheChippendenSpook · 23/08/2021 19:48

My son has two of the old fashioned 80s plastic square lunchboxes. I got then from Amazon and were about £7 each. He has a red one and a blue one.

They don't come with a picture on or a flask but most drinking bottles can fit inside them.

mafted · 23/08/2021 19:57

@YerAWizardHarry
Wales. It's to so parents can see exactly what's been eaten. DC1, now an adult remembers being tracked down by a TA for sneaking an unwanted tuna sandwich into the bin!
