British beach etiquette - lighthearted

We are on holiday on the SW. It’s packed, beaches heaving.

I totally cannot understand how much stuff people take to the beach - and each year I swear it’s getting more. Windbreaks, tents, chairs, and now a new thing….trolleys to transport all the stuff. Plus those inflatable sofa things.

The bit I find really nuts is when people position a windbreak so they can’t even see the sea! What is the point in even going to the beach if you cannot enjoy the view. Some construct almost completely circular camps.

To me, it’s the equivalent of putting your phone up at a gig and recording the whole thing instead of actually watching it.

It’s an oddly British social practice. France - towel or beach mat, an umbrella to stick in the sand for shade if really hot. These are low level and don’t create barriers across the beach for everyone else and do for dogs, kids etc requiring shade.

If it were up to me…chairs only if you are medically unable to sit on the sand. When did teenagers need a chair!

I am really hoping there is someone out there who shares my incredulity at this madness!

I also think some of the growth in stuff people take to the beach is because people are much more cautious about the sun - when I was a child if we went to the beach we just in the sun all day and that was considered not just fine but desirable (got to get a 'base tan'!) whereas now it's considered a bit irresponsible to have children somewhere with no shade for long

Ridiculousradish · 22/08/2021 22:33

It's madness. I bloody hate windbreaks. I live by the sea and go regularly. Even when my boy was little we managed it with just a rucksack. All I need is my swimmers, a towel and some snacks/water. Get a grip people!

Ifixfastjets · 22/08/2021 22:34

I bought a little beach tent. Folds up not much bigger than a shoe box.
I have 2 kids learning to kite surf... so they aren't fussed about the rain. I can sit in my little tent and read a book while watching them. And they can get changed in it when they are finished. One kite. One board. One tent. 2 towels. Maybe a spade for dd. And some drinks.
I did have a couple pitch up near me...
3 wind breaks. 2 sun loungers. Umbrella.
Table. Cool box. 2 bags of picnic. Radio. And a dog. They were knackered carrying it all

We spent today at the beach, not far from home (lucky). Wished I’d taken more! Was supposed to be lunch and a walk but true to form the sun appeared and DC wanted a swim and we had towels but no changes of clothes.

I love seeing all the little family camps setting up!

I don’t love that three separate people allowed their precious dogs to piss up my kids sandcastles (while under construction and kids are with them building ) but that’s a whole other thread.

SkinnyMirror · 22/08/2021 22:46

We managed to carry stuff for 3 adults and 2 kids without a trolley. And get changed without a tent! We had bodyboards, picnic, wetsuits. Yesterday it rained for a bit and I put my coat on.

Well done you. We use a trolley. It makes our lives easier.
You do you and maybe ease up on the judgement 🤷🏼‍♀️

plantastic · 22/08/2021 22:56

It's not just British, we live in a non European Med country where beachgoing is the #1 national pasttime. You must take at least 1 huge umbrella, plastic chairs and table for all, cool box, huge picnic of cooked dishes, large thermos jug of tea, kids' beach toys, bat and ball, towels etc etc. The umbrella will be set up with a lot of drapes around it to make a larger spot of shade. Even quite young people have the same setup. You must also arrive very early; 8 am is not too early at all. You will do this every Sunday from June- August.

I quite like it. The uniform commitment is charming. There are a lot of French people here as well and they turn up with a tiny wicker basket with 2 towels and a paperback.

plantastic · 22/08/2021 22:57

(Oh and proper crockery)

daisylashes · 22/08/2021 23:01

I think it's funny that people get upset if someone settles between them and the sea. As if they "own" the vertical strip to the sea from their spot.
So territorial

name4change · 22/08/2021 23:02

usually take nothing but food, drink and lotion and in France not even clothing but i am lazy and don't have a car and cba carrying it all everywhere

Beebababadabo · 22/08/2021 23:05

Haha laughing reading this as I'm one of those people and probably the worse. I have a trolley/cart and everything. I take so much stuff, windbreaker, wetsuits, towels chairs for the adults and blanket for kids, food, drinks, suncream, extra warm hoodies incase it gets cold, hats, various kids beach toys, sup board, life jackets, bin bag (always take away my rubbish hate litter) I'm utterly exhausted to be honest by the end of it but I do stay the whole day and the kids love it.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 22/08/2021 23:10

I just can't understanding why anyone would want to sit on the beach at all. Absolute nightmare. Walk/run on the beach... lovely. Sit and fry on the beach while sand gets everywhere and sticky salt water nips your skin, people sit too close to you, random dogs appear next to you sniffing around... fucking awful.

TSSDNCOP · 22/08/2021 23:11

I have a trolley. It's fucking awesome. We stroll to the beach now: organised, unsweaty and sofaless.

AdobeWanKenobi · 22/08/2021 23:14

@bettertimesarecomingnow

We took a blanket and a radio today. There were only about it ten people on the beach and we stayed all day.

Did pop to the shop for crisps and juice tho

Now that really does bother me. Nothing more irritating than having to listen to other people's music or choice of radio station. I'm not foisting Megadeth on you so please use headphones and don't foist Your choices on me.
Beebababadabo · 22/08/2021 23:17

OP you say your post is light hearted but you bring up climate crisis because people want to buy a trolley or windbreak Confused
not something I could every get worked up about but carry on.

TSSDNCOP · 22/08/2021 23:23

I used to think, as I dragged chairs and windbreaks, towels and picnics "I wish someone would invent a trolley with wide wheels to make this easier". Then they did! It makes me so happy.

Disclaimer all shit in trolley at least 15 years old, and means we don't forget anything and buy from the eye watering suitcase of cash needed kiosk, so all cool on the climate thing.

Friendofdennis · 22/08/2021 23:45

I saw a woman lose her temper as her husband strolled ahead oblivious to the fact that she was carting ALL the stuff on her own I hated being the pack horse when my children were young Now we park close to the beach and sit on our camping chairs with a flask of hot chocolate, book and sunscreen

Berkeys · 22/08/2021 23:47

YANBU!

Hell thy name is other people.

Saw what you did there Wink
Needapoodle · 23/08/2021 09:37

And you know, climate emergency. Why are we buying so much (unnecessary) stuff to take with us? And yet we see someone else with something that looks handy and want one.

You don't need bodyboards and wetsuits though. Don't wetsuits just detract from the beauty of the natural feel of the water on your skin? What's the point of going to the beach if you're not appreciating the natural environment around you? And why do you need a bodyboard? Can't you just swim and not clutter up the beach with all the plastic?

userh · 23/08/2021 09:40

You are forgetting the British etiquette of setting up your noisy smelly (bbq, vaping) beach encampment as per OP right next to some other poor sods, despite the beach having plenty of empty space.

Needapoodle · 23/08/2021 09:41

I just go as i am. Go in the sea in my knickers, then air dry. Towels are for wussies. I don't know why anyone would need to take snacks, water and a rucksack. Come on people, get a grip!

userh · 23/08/2021 09:45

We do have a beach tent thing though to hide from the annoying idiots who set up their encampments too near hide from the midday sun.

This does draw baffled looks in France though. You know that all the other beach tent things are also Brits if you are on a French beach.

DupontsLark · 23/08/2021 09:51

Spanish family (several generations) set up several collapsible tables to make one long dining table and chairs on the beach and had a full blown feast last time we were in Majorca. The younger ones played volleyball. Lots of equipment, no suncream Grin

doingadisservice · 23/08/2021 09:56

If your children can't entertain themselves on a beach without loads of stuff then maybe you need to look at that.

All our holidays are spent on north Devon beaches.
We literally take towels, fishing line and nets, drinks and snacks.
The kids have always had their own bags so can only take what they can carry.

Sandy beaches with no rock pools are boring.
