Potty training problem!

Could anyone advise me please?

DS is 3 next month. We are on day 4. I haven't read any books (v unusual for me!). We put him in pants without any other bottoms at home, chocolate button for anything produced, lots of praise, stayed indoors or v close to home for the first 2 days. Straight onto toilet with a training seat.

Wee wise he is amazing. No accidents today at all and we were on a motorway and he said he needed to go and managed to hold it for 10 minutes.

But poo... another story. He wants to go but just won't on the loo. We haven't managed it yet and he has pood in his pants every day once or twice, sometimes literally seconds after getting off the loo.

Any advice?!

Really normal, he will get there. Try reading Poo goes home to Pooland to him.

God what's happened to my life...

Thanks, I'll order it now! It's a bugger it isn't the other way around...

I'm a childminder and have potty trained dozens of children, you'd be surprised how common it is!

That's reassuring, I don't want to go backwards because he is doing so well with the wee but it's like he is actually scared of going on the loo. He is very loose atm (sorry!),don't know if that helps or not!

Am I right in thinking Poo goes to Pooland is only available as a download?

Pirate Pete's potty on YouTube was great for our DS. Good luck, it's really common and it must be such a weird sensation when you've only known poo's in nappies.

Start by letting him poo in his nappy in the bathroom, then let him sit on the toilet in his nappy and poo, then cut a whole in his nappy for the poo to fall through, then remove the nappy

So common. All of mine cracked wees quickly but poos another story.

With DD it took a good few weeks and lots of pooey pants and I'm afraid to say with DS it look over a year. However DS would hold it in all day and then poo in a night nappy which we changed. He got there in the end (I wasn't so cool at the time, v stressful).

I think just thing to keep calm and keep gently talking helped. Easier said than done!

Good luck 🤞🏻

@MsChatterbox

Start by letting him poo in his nappy in the bathroom, then let him sit on the toilet in his nappy and poo, then cut a whole in his nappy for the poo to fall through, then remove the nappy
This is very similar to a method recommended by ERIC (the children's bowel and bladder charity, they have lots of potty training advice).

I had a child that took well over a year to poo in the toilet, though he was otherwise trained and would just ask for a nappy. It’s a weird sensory thing/feeling of losing a bit of themselves and some children do find it very scary. We eventually had success with the method MsChatterbox outlines combined with a lot of bribery. Absolutely key thing tho is don’t turn it into a battle or a big deal. Lots of reassurance. Also make sure he’s really secure on the seat and has support for his feet. Or try a potty.

For day four though he’s doing very well! Don’t worry too much yet, even my easy child took a week or two to get the hang of pooing in the loo.

Thank you! He totally is, we are so pleased, I just wanted to get any tips for how to make it a bit easier. His feet aren't flat on the step... that's worth a thought. Thanks!

My son had this too, we just said to tell us when he needs a poo and wed put a nappy on him, he'd go off to a corner or to the toilet then come to us to take the nappy off, this went on for about 6 weeks before he became comfortable enough to poo on the toilet.

It took DC3 about 3 months to poo on the potty after he was trained for wees. He started by not pooing at all which gave him constipation. Once we resolved this he asked for a nappy when he wanted to poo. Although I was stressing about it I was really calm about it with him and gradually started encouraging him to sit on the potty when he needed to poo. He eventually got there in his own time and is no absolutely fine. They do get there in their own time so just try not to stress too much - good luck
