Where would you go with £3k with a young family?

My Nanna left me a gift of £3k and I’d always had it earmarked for a family trip/experience. DC are 8 and 6. I was thinking on splashing out on a smaller trip but staying somewhere really special. Current ideas are Disneyland Paris (although the main hotel is closed for renovations indefinitely and that’s really where I fancied). Or Lapland perhaps.

Any other ideas for a special one off experience?

Is it just the 3 of you? Not sure you'd be able to stretch to Lapland but Disney Paris is definitely a possibility.

What about learning to sail?

Minorca Sailing is a lovely location and well run fun, May/June half term maybe?

Apologies that is too expensive, sorry

Twerking9to5 · 22/08/2021 16:33

There’s DH as well! We’d look at possibly topping up for something really cool

Thank you! I’ll have a look as we can top up a bit

I'd definitely say Disneyland Paris.

PoppyDotx · 22/08/2021 16:37

Disneyland Paris is wonder

PoppyDotx · 22/08/2021 16:38

@PoppyDotx

Disneyland Paris is wonder
I meant to say Disneyland Paris is wonderful and it'll be really good, the b & b hotel in Disneyland Paris is awesome, it includes breakfast and free shuttles to the park.
Twerking9to5 · 22/08/2021 16:52

Thank you! What’s the name of the b n b? I also thought I might wait until covid restrictions were lifted more and parades/character meets were back on. Although who knows how long that’ll be Confused

I think I'd do a couple of different things with that especially if travel abroad is difficult. We had an absolutely magical time at Warwick Castle, we stayed overnight and did the knights school, medieval feast etc. I think there's much more to choose from there now too (this was about 7 years ago) but was a fantastic experience and your DC are the perfect age for it. It reminded me of narnia, just magical.

The sailing idea is great!!

I would splash out on Disneyland or Lapland personally... I would rather put it towards a skill like sailing or stand up paddling or perhaps even getting a campervan and travelling around the US or somewhere for a month... !!

jclm · 22/08/2021 17:13

Wouldn't

You could go to one of the boutique festivals that has a child friendly vibe, and/or buy a fab bell tent and all the bells and whistles so that you could use it over the next few years.

You could do probably four festivals over a few years and have all the luxe extras

A campervan tour around Europe.

DLP is a good call.

We've had some lovely hols in Barcelona within that budget, it is a great city for dc.

stripedbananas · 23/08/2021 19:52

Go to Disneyland Paris once they're tall enough for most rides and everything is back to normal again.

In the meantime take them to Legoland or Chessington to see if they like that kind of thing

Don't bother with Lapland for now.

BlaiseAnais · 23/08/2021 19:58

Disneyland was my favourite holiday as a Kid.
We've stayed in a few of the hotels.

I would defo wait until restrictions have lifted fully so that you can get the full experience.

I've never stayed in the main hotel but my favourite is the Newport Bay Hotel. I've stayed a couple of times and it's still magical for a kid and even teens despite not being the main hotel.

stripedbananas · 23/08/2021 20:00

The main Hotel at DLP will cost more than you think so have a proper look at the other DLP hotels which have transport every few minutes.

Some have pools but do check the pools are open as I nearly paid more for a hotel because of the pool which I was told would be shut that summer.

I usually book online but it's worth calling them to if you have questions so you can find out about the pool situation.

The main hotel is full of people wandering around to look at it so we prefer the other hotels so the DC can run around more safely. Avoid Santa Fe though as it's the cheapest.

We always seem to end up at Cheyenne but I like the look of the upper mid range ones.

Go by train if you can and they take your luggage straight from the train to your hotel so you can walk straight to DLP. Makes life so much easier etc

I think fancier hotels are lost on children what they remember is odd things like ice creams (my DDwho was 7 at the time, remembers the pumpkin and amaretto icecream we had in Soave and the rialto bridge and how far we walked in Venice. from our trip to italy best) also rides or events not the luxury robes in hotel room, but the money is yours so you should consider yourself too we try and make holidays so at least one day everyone gets to do what they really want, we do not spend the whole week only doing things that DD wants to do, we balance it old ruins for Dad shopping and icecream for DD the odd art gallery and scenic drive for me. She was fine at 7 in Europe as old enough to stay up till 9 so we could eat out for dinner at a normal time it is hard to find good food for dinner before 7pm
