Anything that has worked to increase energy?

Hi everyone

Just wondering what ( if anything) people have found actually helps with increasing energy in your mid 40s? I’m really struggling with the constant fatigue/exhaustion and trying to find something that might help. Mainly because I’d really like to be able to have some sort of social life and have energy for my kids.

I’m mid 40s, single parent to two primary age, one of who with SEN ( who is challenging) and work pretty much full time but around the kids school. Don’t have any family support so day to day life is pretty draining. Ended up having to have a few months off work recently basically with burn out but also had some medical issues that needed investigating ( luckily all good) and some wider family difficulties ( close relative with cancer).

The exhaustion really started just before COViD though after I’d had really severe and recurring tonsillitis for several months. I mean I was tired before but not like this. I have suffered from PNd and depression but I’m truly on a good place mentally now. And work is also good and amazingly supportive.

I don’t drink now due to a genetic medical issue, have really tried to eat healthily the last few months and defo don’t have low iron or vit D. Do drink too much coffee. Don’t exercise enough as difficult to fit it in and honestly feel too exhausted most days ( also have a long standing back issue due to an accident in my mid teens). Thinking of trying to start HIT workouts at home maybe ( kind of stuck in the house because of the kids).

Other than somehow trying to change my life Smile does anyone have anything to suggest that has worked for them? I’m intending to try GP again but hard to get them to understand how debilitating the exhaustion is.

I'd actually suggest yoga rather than hiit given what you're handling day-to-day.

If you could swap some of your coffee for decaf or herbal tea/ drink more water you might also find that helps.

How do you sleep?

Branleuse · 22/08/2021 09:23

HRT and B vitamins

Beakerandbungle · 22/08/2021 09:25

@Palavah - not great. This is long standing because of my back so I’ve basically pretty much never slept through the night since I was 17. Which sounds crazy now I write it down. But yes sleep isn’t good but not as terrible as it has been when I’m most stressed.

I used to do a lot of Pilates but yes yoga might be a good idea as I do have the feeling my back is worse due to stiffness atm.

I started using Floradix iron tablets. Made a huge difference. I’ve also noticed that on mornings I force myself to do 30 minutes living room walking workout I definitely have better energy. So I feel a bit achy but brain is fully on ifyswim. I’ve also reluctantly noticed that if I ditch my chocolate treats of an evening I feel quite spritely in the mornings.

@Branleuse - yeah I was wondering about asking about HRT.

@Branleuse

HRT and B vitamins
These were my two thoughts as well
Beakerandbungle · 22/08/2021 09:27

@BareVanilla - ditching chocolate is a good shout! I have a condition that means I have too much iron so defo no iron tablets or vitamin C for me. Could try a walking work out actually as that would probably be ok in the evenings too

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone Smile

I take a mix of B and D vitamins which seems to boost me. Getting outside is a major factor!

Galassia · 22/08/2021 09:38

Magnesium supplement.

I occasionally drink Complan as an extra ‘meal’ as I like to maintain my weight and not look vaunt and ind it does give a boost of energy.

What I take every day though is a glass of chocolate Meritene and that gives me lots of energy.

Occasionally on a hike I will take a Lift glucose tablet or drink an energy drink.

Lift tablet -

There is also an orange flavour but I like the raspberry one.

The yoga should help you to stretch and
to sleep! Restorative is the most rrelaxing.

I'd start with that - sleep is key, and anything more strenuous is just going to risk injury if you're already tired.

Palavah · 22/08/2021 09:43

Pilates good too!

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 22/08/2021 09:47

Losing weight and intermittent fasting (only eating in a 4-6 hour window each day) and reducing processed food really improved my energy levels - I was a little overweight, and losing 5kg gave me so much more energy. I didn't get the energy highs and slumps that snacking and eating lots of processed food gave me.

Also not using my phone or any screens after 8pm really helped my sleep and I felt so much more refreshed waking up in the morning although I haven't stuck to it

Beakerandbungle · 22/08/2021 09:55

@HopelesslydevotedtoGu I should definitely do the screen one!
