Passing time and advice in A&E

At about three I had a bad fall. Wrist certainly broken; query vertebrae as have osteoporosis. Hoping not.

Waited nearly two hours for the ambulance in the rain and passers by were very helpful. wrist excruciating - had morphine in the ambulance. Very little communication, no Xray yet and haven't seen anyone else. Think I have been shunted into minor injuries. So many people seem to have been seen and have left.

I appreciate they are busy but it seems shambolic - the constant stream of high volume quiz shows doesn't help.

Ha that's a nightmare op. Can you walk? Have they given you a wheelchair?

It being Saturday night probably doesn't help. Sad

PostMenPatWithACat · 21/08/2021 20:36

Yes have a wheelchair. Contemplating how I might manage a trip to the loo.

Newchances · 21/08/2021 20:36

Have you been triaged ?

PostMenPatWithACat · 21/08/2021 20:38

I think they did that between ambulance staff and hospital staff. They said so. A nurse had a quick chat with me but English wasn't her first language and I'm not too sure what she told me.

I was in a&e for 6 hours two weeks ago. Actually had a laugh with some of the other people there! There was a crazy woman that attached herself to every new person that joined us, and loudly told them all of her ailments!

PostMenPatWithACat · 21/08/2021 21:43

Still waiting. 4 hrs 12 minutes in a&e, plus 2.5 hours between fall and arriving here.

6.75 hours now.

Sorry you've had such a long wait. Hopefully you will be seen soon.

Mseddy · 21/08/2021 21:47

I spent 8 hours sat in a&e 3 weeks ago at 34 weeks pregnant with sever nose bleeds. They treated me quickly in resus as it was deemed life threatening. But once treated I sat on a trolley for 8 hours waiting for a bed on the ward. I was then shifted round 3 different wards in the hospital before finally being given a place to sleep at 0130. I attended a&e at 9am. It's shit out there at the moment!! I hope you get seen soon!

user64325 · 21/08/2021 21:53

I'm sorry OP, at least you have your phone and signal! I've had a few similar trips with no signal at all and no food/water or cash on me. I think the single most frustrating thing about long hospital waits in A&E is the complete absence of communication. If you were told on arrival an estimated triage time and then told after that an estimated time to see the doctor then you'd know if you had time to go to the toilet/go and make a phone call/get food and not just be sat clueless for hours on end wondering if they've forgotten you but not wanting to ask. I've never once been told these things when waiting in A&E and I really struggle with it.

PostMenPatWithACat · 21/08/2021 21:57

Morphine wearing off now! I think I'm going to ask them to write some more up.

Ugh I can completely sympathise after a 7 hour stay in A&E with a DC with croup and stridor recently.

I think they have a new policy which is to just leave everyone unattended and untreated until they either get better without treatment, get fed up and go home or they die.

Only half joking about that btw.

PostMenPatWithACat · 21/08/2021 22:07

It's the lack of communication largely. There's noone at the desk now either.

If the ED you're in is like ours, highly likely linked to being fucked for staff. We're struggling to even get bank staff from agencies never mind nhs bank.
We're not pissing about making people wait for fun. You do know the government have punitive measures for hospitals with wait times in ED?

MissTrip82 · 21/08/2021 22:10

A triage nurse spoke such poor English you couldn’t understand her?

That’s extremely unusual.

This. It’s Saturday night in Covid times
PostMenPatWithACat · 21/08/2021 22:13

I don't know if she was a triage nurse. I think that happened between ambulance and front desk. She just put a sling on.

You say lack of communication, have you communicated with them and asked for updates. If you didn't understand the nurse that spoke to you you shouldhave said that to her so she could have asked another colleague to explain things to you
PostMenPatWithACat · 21/08/2021 22:17

I didn't want to be rude.

PostMenPatWithACat · 21/08/2021 22:18

Someone asked who came in ages after me and got very short shrift.

DD had to take my granddaughter in 2 weeks ago for a nasty cut just below her eyebrow. It needed stitching..... they tried MIU, and got sent on to the main county hospital. They were then sent from A & E to the out of hours GP, who refused to touch it and sent them upstairs to paeds assessment. It took nearly 11 hours to have a few stitches put in.

We've got several private hospitals locally but none offer A & E facilities. They're seriously missing a trick now the NHS is going under.

Indeed.
Wineandroses3 · 21/08/2021 22:57

You’re not in a Liverpool hospital by any chance are you? My relative was admitted a fortnight ago via ambulance to a & e and it was absolutely totally and utterly horrendous, he waited that long he discharged himself and then collapsed in taxi. Don’t think it helped that in whole time he was there he didn’t get so much as a glass of water and was very dehydrated and not able to help himself or communicate very well. It was horrific

PostMenPatWithACat · 21/08/2021 23:34

I didn't say it was a triage nurse, I believe I was triage between ambulance and clinical staff. Nobody asked anything until 30 mins ago.

It's like every thread lately ends with the op being grilled aggressively for no reason whatsoever!

So sorry for your wait op. Injuries sound really painful. Defo ask for more pain relief and hope you get seen soon.

A bit of sympathy and compassion doesn't hurt now does it?

OnlyFlans · 22/08/2021 07:54

I hope you got seen in the end OP and are back home recovering now?
