Films you saw as a child that you probably shouldn't have (lighthearted)

My parents were never very restrictive of what I watched as a kid. Their mindset was "if she doesn't like us, she'll tell us," which meant I watched a lot of 15+ movies when I was still a tot. Braveheart, Deep Impact...

Has anyone got any stories about movies they watched as a kid that affected them and they probably shouldn't have watched?

Mine was The Sixth Sense. I was all good until the bit where Hayley Osment sees the hanging people. Then Mum took me to bed because I was so freaked out BlushGrin

The Neverending Story. Horse. Swamp. Enough said Sad

Middleagedfrog · 21/08/2021 20:23

@LadyFannyButton
Also The Blue Lagoon
How I wished I hadn't seen that film, I went with friends, we somehow persuaded them we were 14 years old. I was hoping they wouldn't let us in but they did.

The other was a children's TV program, I can't remember the title but I think it was based on fairy tales. Anyway at the end the prince was shot with hundreds of arrows and he turned into a hedgehog, I couldn't stop thinking about it and getting upset.

Notashandyta · 21/08/2021 20:23

Jaws here too.

Not as bad as pp but those blood curdling screams at the beginning from that woman... Struggle in a swimming pool now tbh Blush
Like other kids of the 80s and 90s, watched all manner 9f horror films by 11, but none stuck in my psyche like jaws

felulageller · 21/08/2021 20:24

If a film was in global video in the 80s I watched it.

I don't ever remember not watching horrors/18s.

The only film I was sent upstairs away from was Body Heat.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 21/08/2021 20:25

8mm. I was about 11. REALLY inappropriate.

Squashpocket · 21/08/2021 20:26

Interview with the vampire and demolition man when I was 7 (at my friends dad's house, he was a bit of a weekend Disney dad type so probably thought he was being really cool or something).

Stephen Kings IT at a sleepover when I was 11.

Although honestly, demolition man is amazing and still one of my favourites and I wasn't remotely traumatised by seeing IT at age 11, so in reality it was probably fine 😂

BettyAndFrank · 21/08/2021 20:28

I was allowed to watch 18 films from the age of about 10!

Thisisthewaywego · 21/08/2021 20:32

Dark Crystal - the puppets freaked me out a bit bit I was still fascinated at the same time.

Arachnophobia (Stephen King)- had to turn it off half-way through. Still hate spiders.

Jaws, should never watch this if you like the sea!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/08/2021 20:37

Sybil.

I'm not sure what age I was (very young) but I was haunted by the scene where she is trapped in the grain silo, and also the one where her mother strapped her down and gave her an enema.

FatAnkles · 21/08/2021 20:39

I also watched Pretty Woman at a young age. I watched it again yesterday (as it happens) and i was like, WTF did I watch this st 11 years old?

AnonymousCheerleader · 21/08/2021 20:40

Drop Dead Fred was my favourite film from the age from 5.

thiskiwicanfly · 21/08/2021 20:41

Saw Rocky Horror Picture Show when I was about 8, with my younger siblings and a bunch of other kids when our parents were having an early 80’s dinner party. Pretty sure we weren’t supposed to see that!

And vividly remember seeing Friday 13th, Part V at a friends birthday party. Still struggle with long drop toilets.

toooothacheee · 21/08/2021 20:43

East is East when I was about 9 Grin

Bloody tickle tackle

Ha ha pretty much the same if it was a VHS rental we were allowed to watch

There just wasn’t the same taboo or knowledge around these extreme horror or violent films , it was just a novelty to hire a VHS and pop it on.

Total recall
Freddy movies
Child’s play
Predator
Poltergeist etc

Mamamamasaurus · 21/08/2021 20:51

Pretty woman. Dirty dancing. People under the stairs. Poltergeist. Trainspotting. Go name a few.

My egg donor didn't give much of a fuck, so long as we didn't bother her.

tunainatin · 21/08/2021 20:52

Dogs in space with Michael hutchence when I was about 12. A door to another world, not in a good way!

Marmelace · 21/08/2021 20:55

Jaws when I was 7, I was terrified to go the toilet ages

Bordois · 21/08/2021 20:55

Tommy, the bit with the acid queen.

Inextremis · 21/08/2021 20:56

I managed to get into a cinema when I was 13 to see 'Blood on Satan's Claw' and 'The Creeping Flesh' - neither of which affected me as much as 'A Clockwork Orange' which I saw the same year.

Keepitonthedownlow · 21/08/2021 20:57

Midnight express aged 10. Never have smuggled drugs Grin

OverByYer · 21/08/2021 20:58

Zoltan Hound of Dracula. I’m still terrified of Doberman’s to this day.

Dubbin · 21/08/2021 20:58

The Birds - Alfred Hitchcock
This was a family favourite; children aged 4 - 14!

WhispersOfWickedness · 21/08/2021 20:59

Dirty Dancing when I was 7, but that whole situation was not good, so not surprising really.
Grease when I was 10, I loved it, but a lot went over my head 😆
Also my mum showed me American Werewolf in London when I was about 11 or 12, I still hate transformation scenes and zombie type films 🙈

Fordian · 21/08/2021 21:01

'The Devil Rides Out' aged 8.

😂😂😂

In 1970, we went to visit grandparents. My parents went to the local pub with grandma, leaving me and DB, aged 8 and 10, with our lovely, but, in terms of childcare, hopeless - grandad in charge.

He allowed us to watch what I think was 'The Devil Rides Out' on telly.

😂😂

SheWhoRemains · 21/08/2021 21:02

@NoWordForFluffy

My dad clearly had a bang on the head let us watch War of the Worlds when I was 7/8 (DSis was 10/11). Not a good idea! 🙈🤣
My parents did this when I was about three or four? I don't remember actually watching the film but I do remember my grandad then finding it absolutely hilarious to play the movie soundtrack on his record player and watch me cry because the music terrified me so much.
