Can anyone advise about benefits for ds?

He just left uni and is job hunting. Has a part-time job in asda about 15-20 hours a week. He'll try to get more hours now uni is finished but it isn't guaranteed. He rents a flat with a pal, who works full-time.
He knows he's going to be paying council tax, as well as the rent and bills he pays now. But without his student loan he's going to struggle .

Does anyone know if he could claim any benefits?

I found the gov.uk website very helpful, there's a benefit calculator

Thanks, I'll tell him.
I'm just wondering if anyone has been in this situation?

I was in this situation, I found other jobs. He's a grown man, with a degree , why does he need his mum to work this out for him?

sandgrown · 21/08/2021 08:09

He could probably try for Universal Credit but his earnings may be too much. Possible council tax benefit depending on his income.

Gingerkittykat · 21/08/2021 08:14

He might be able to claim some universal credit to help towards his rent, depending on how much it is. He needs to put in an online application for that.

He can apply for council tax benefits through the local council which will give him a discount.

I'm sure he doesn't need his mum to work it out for him but if you're a mum you try and help your kids. Even when they're not kids any more.

my dd was able to claim universal credit when she struggled to pay rent.

dancemom · 21/08/2021 08:52

Yes Universal Credit, apply online as soon as possible. When applying confirm he has a Council Tax liability and Universal Credit will notify his local Council of his award and Council Tax Reduction can then be awarded towards his bill.

You can calculate what UC he’d get. He’ll get the standard allowance for under 25s plus the LHA shared accommodation rate for his postcode. Then every £ he earns will reduce this by 63p. He may get some UC but it’ll depend on his rent and earnings

MrsLargeEmbodied · 21/08/2021 09:07

my dd also in shock when she no longer had her student loan to live on

he could move back home
he could get a full time job
if that isnt forthcoming he can go the job centre/apply for universal credit

If ds knew i was asking on his behalf he'd think I'm nuts Grin

Agree with monkeynuts, he needs to sort it out himself.
