How much freedom do you give your 10 year old?

We live in a medium sized village, with a shop 2 minutes away and a park 5 minutes away.

Ds is sensible and follows the rules. We have been testing him out and allowing him to go to the park and the shop on his own or with friends.

What freedom did you have at that age, and what do you allow your kids? X

My dd is ten...she doesn'tt go anywhere alone or just with friends. I wouldn't allow her to walk anywhere alone yet. She is very young for her age though...some minor sn.

My ds was eleven, in year six, when he started walking to school by himself and I'd drop him off at the park and he'd play with friends.

Sorry about the 'x'! Blush

I did anything I liked at 10, went anywhere I wanted - used the bus, subway or walked.

I let my son who is 11 walk to the shop nearby, go to the park 10 minutes away, the library nearby and to the cinema at the bottom of our road. He has a mobile phone now so I like him to make sure it’s on just in case.

My daughter is 10 now but she doesn’t have much interest in going places alone, she mainly visits her friend’s house who lives 1 street away so that’s okay. Then she will walk to the shop at the end of the street with her friend, but she doesn’t go much further.

DD is 10 next term. She is the youngest child, so more grown up for her age than DS was. We live in a big hush village. She is allowed to the shop 2 mins away, and the shop 3 mins away across a busy road at a crossing. She is allowed to walk to DM’s house, if she crosses the road at a particular point. Also allowed to walk to Tesco local 5-10 mins away with DS.

My 10yo can play out and go around our (very small and rural) village. She can stay home alone while we walk the dog.

We're at a festival right now (a family friendly one though) and I am happy for her to go places alone or with her sister and meet us.

I would let her go alone in a larger town or anything like that.

*wouldn't let her go alone in a larger town
