Can anyone recommend a good bottle of red wine ?

It's a present for a friend's special birthday and I have no clue whatsoever Grin

I love Ripasso, you can get nice ones from all the Sainsbury's etc taste the difference or the Morrison's types. it's an Italian red which is particularly flavourful and delicious due to the way they sun dry the grapes or something. About £10.

Either a Warwick Red or Meerlust Rubicon from South Africa. (I'm supporting SA vineyards because alcohol is currently banned in the country and the industry is on its knees.)

The Warwick one is called "Trilogy".

If they like red wine, they will love Chateauneuf du Pape. It’s a rich, complex wine from the Rhône region of France. Wine for people who like wine. Waitrose do a decent one for £20.

Thanks everyone for replying .

With red wine is it worth spending my budget on the best I can afford . Or would a £10 bottle suffice and I could get some chocs or something as well .
I am so ignorant when it comes to wine, currently drinking a glass of Aldi Pinot £4.49

You don’t really want supermarket wine for a birthday gift ... Grin

Have a look here, Buon Vino, OP, and just pick something you like the sound of. You can’t really go wrong. (If you choose something biodynamic your friend will wake up with a clearer head ...)

MrsJackRackham · 20/08/2021 22:11

I'd much rather get 3 bottles of £8 wine than 1 bottle costing £25. But I'm a greedy fucker. Once you're over £7 I don't think there's a great deal of difference in quality tbh.

gardeninggirl68 · 20/08/2021 22:12

really enjoy jamshed!!

Brilliant
I'm going to pick one from this list with confidence Wine
Thanks again for all your suggestions.

I love The Guv'nor £8.99 from Majestic - haven't served it to any red wine drinker that didn't like it.

texasss · 20/08/2021 22:42

Have a look at Berry Bros. and Rudd, they're a wine broker and merchant and I've never had a bad bottle from them yet.

What utter nonsense Hmm

DH is a wine enthusiast and buys most of our wines from supermarkets. You can get some pretty impressive wines from most supermarkets if you know what you are looking for.

Germolenequeen · 20/08/2021 22:59

Was going to recommend Chateauneuf Du Pape too 🙂

Edmontine · 20/08/2021 23:15

Mmm ... The thing is, RampantIvysHusband, most of the wine I drink now is produced by relatively tiny vineyards that just couldn’t make enough to supply even one national supermarket.

And after about four decades of varied wine consumption I’m quite enjoying the adventure of discovering these smaller producers.

So no, given a free choice, I wouldn’t now choose wine primarily produced to supply supermarket chains as a birthday present for myself or someone else. (Because I’d want the fun of enthusing about my discovery.) It doesn’t really matter if you find my preference nonsensical.

MrsDThomas · 21/08/2021 07:27

Ive tried expensive wine and really more often than not, i go back to a cheaper one.

Nothing wrong with supermarket wine.

Mojocares · 24/01/2023 05:30

I am currently in Spain and there is a lot of hype amongst expats here about The Guv'nor red wine, sold by one of the leading supermarkets here for around 3.5 euros. It is even sold in majestic in the UK for more than double that. The wine is very smooth and goes down well but is very sweet. I really suspect it has a load of sugar added. But there is no way to tell how much sugar is added to wine. My husband is an enthusiast for this wine but I am now really wary and won't drink it, as I am borderline diabetic and I am worried about his weight. Can anyone throw light on this issue?

RampantIvy · 24/01/2023 06:30

I was once given some Jamshed red wine, and it was far too sweet for my taste. I prefer a nice merlot.

UnaVaca · 24/01/2023 06:38

Chateauneuf du pape

Mybumlooksbig · 24/01/2023 06:47

I love the rioja with the yellow label Calmpo something??
