Been asked to take DD in to GP post blood tests

I'm taking DD in to see GP Monday morning after a set of blood tests that were ordered because she has been ill, every week since she started nursery about 5 months ago. Lots of GP visits, some antibiotics, few out of hours trips and an admission for breathing issues caused by bronchiolitis. All relatively minor, but not quite 'manage at home with calpol minor'. She also had surgery a couple of months ago to remove a lump and then got an infection, which again needed antibiotics.

My gut feeling is she is fine, just crappy immune system as she was born in lockdown so had little chance to mix and be transferred exposed to bugs, and then has been hit like a tonne of bricks since starting nursery.

Obviously something has shown up in the tests though for them to ask us in. Receptionist said it was 'routine, and anytime next week will do per the dr's notes'. I don't need to stress do I? She's 15 months.

Should add, the tissue from the lump (which randomly appeared on her head at 10 weeks) has been analysed and they don't know what it is but it shows no sign of malignancy and we have been told absolutely not to worry about it- just an anatomical anomaly apparently.

Aw, bless you, can see how you're worried.

Defo nothing serious though, or you wouldn't have been told anytime next week...
Might be something small like a vitamin deficiency? If you get it sorted, your lo may feel a whole lot better and have a better immune system.
Won't happen, but try not to worry (especially about anything serious) Flowers

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking some kind of deficiency or maybe low white blood cells because she's been so rough all the time and a re test in a few weeks perhaps, with a physical examination in the meantime to triple check all ok?!?

Surely for anything serious we'd have been asked in yesterday (when they called) or today?

I do know babies get ill a lot when they start nursery (DD is DC2) but she has really suffered. My gut feeling is she is 'fine' but we're probably in for a rough Autumn/Winter Hmm

When it is really serious they take immediate action. A relative was called at midnight by a duty Dr and told to take himself to A&E immediately due to his blood test results.

Youcanchangeyournamebut · 20/08/2021 21:03

Yes @AnnaSW1, I've had relatives called at gone 8 at night by GP and asked into the surgery for bad results so hoping this is something very minor. Can't help but worry though. I also think if something was seriously wrong I'd have an inkling at least. She has been sooooo poorly but I do just think its mostly crappy immune system Confused

GP told me to come and see her post blood test results. It was a Vitamin D deficiency! I Wasn't sure why she couldn't tell me on the phone. It may well not be serious so don't panic.

Everyone I know whose child had something very scary got a call following blood tests and ordered to go straight to hospital

Youcanchangeyournamebut · 23/08/2021 20:05

So I took her in and as predicted, her white blood cell count is raised. It's the monocyte type that are higher, just our of normal range. And the overall count is slightly high too. The Doctor did a physical examination and was happy with her health and development and has ordered a re test for three weeks time to see if it comes back down.

Good update OP! Sorry didn’t catch the thread first time round.

That's a relief!
