What's your thoughts on being off sick from work

I've always thought if you are too sick to work that you are too sick to go out and enjoy yourself. A woman at work was on holiday and didn't come back the next week or for the first three days of the following week - something to do with feeling a bit rubbish (not mental health related) and she has cream and and tablets from the Dr. She let slip that she was in the pub with her friend on Saturday. I just would not do this. If you are well enough to go to the pub and drink surely you're well enough to go to your work.

Mind your own.

SeaDreaming · 20/08/2021 19:33

My thoughts are that it's nothing to do with you... Hmm

redpandaalert · 20/08/2021 19:33

Rubbish. If you had a chronic illness you would not be questioning this.

SnowyPetals · 20/08/2021 19:34

I am with you OP.

GreenBiro · 20/08/2021 19:34

Depends on the condition, the job and the circumstances.

StarttoFinish · 20/08/2021 19:34

I agree with you for myself, I wouldn't go the the pub if I wasn't well enough for work, except perhaps in very specific circumstances where a night out might help my recovery. For others I think it's best to assume you don't have a clue what the full story is and let her worry about her and you worry about you.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 20/08/2021 19:36

It depends what you're off sick for. If your job is sitting in the pub with your friends relaxing, then you're right- you're probably well enough for work if you can manage that.

CiaoForNiao · 20/08/2021 19:40

Depends on the illness and the job. And it's none of your business.
When I was signed off sick with MH issues I told colleagues a totally different reason. If they had asked I would have probably made up some lie about meds from Dr.

iklboo · 20/08/2021 19:43

You don't know what, precisely, she was off for. She might have felt better by the Saturday, or that was when she got what it was that made her ill.

perfectasalways · 20/08/2021 19:48

She was off ill the whole week before she went to the pub as I said and a few days the following week. Something to do with a rash. I honestly don't care but if I'm not well I get the third degree - for instance I get migraines and I think she thinks I make them up for convenience. She doesn't have mental health issues - she doesn't really believe in them!

I really think you need to not worry about it. If management/HR are dealing with it there’s nothing you can, or need to do.

perfectasalways · 20/08/2021 19:53

As I said before I really don't care it was more a general question about what you yourself would do in similar circumstances. If I have been off work not well I am not well enough to go and sit in the pub for a few hours.

needsomesleeppls · 20/08/2021 19:54

Yeah that's not right.

godmum56 · 20/08/2021 20:11
  1. not your business
  2. You can be well enough to go out and still not be well enough to go to work
  3. nasty people are as entitled to confidentiality as nice ones are.
AbsolutelyPatsy · 20/08/2021 20:12

what is the point of coming on here?

Muddydoor · 20/08/2021 20:18

There was a court case recently that established that people can go to the pub while they are off ill

topcat2014 · 20/08/2021 20:19

MN always forgives these people but I call it skiving.

Champagneforeveryone · 20/08/2021 20:21

I was signed off sick a few weeks ago and someone reported me for going to a pub. For context I had not left the house for over a week and DH took me for a stroll and a bite to eat.

It's left rather a nasty taste in my mouth TBH as nobody knew why I was off, and the snitch my colleague just assumed I must be in self isolation and was breaching it.

None of your business OP.

GrumpyTerrier · 20/08/2021 20:22

Not necessarily a piss take. My fella had chronic delibating chest pains for months and had to be off work but he was functional in a daily way, just not a "commute then work 11 hour days" way. He would go to the pub now and then to claw some semblance of normality. He was still very ill.

Some people do take the piss too, though.

PaperMonster · 20/08/2021 20:22

Goodness me, I went to a ball once when I was off with stress! And whilst I don’t go to pubs, I’ve certainly been out and about whilst I’ve been off recuperating from an accident this year although I’ve not been able to drive. No doubt you think I should have worked from home Hmm

Fairyfalls · 20/08/2021 20:23

I have been covering my colleague who is off sick and in Spain. Watching her drink cocktails on Facebook whilst I cover her work doesn't feel right to me? To make it worse she is back from sick now in work for two days then booked the two weeks leave that would have covered her holiday off! So she is back after the Bank hols.

Stormyequine · 20/08/2021 20:25

I am currently off work sick after surgery earlier this week. I managed to sit and have lunch in a pub yesterday. No way I could manage a 10 hour shift at work at the moment as that would mean engaging my brain for an extended period when sitting in a pub for a couple of hours wiped me out. I don't see how they are the same thing at all.

elizabethdraper · 20/08/2021 20:28

I was off sick for 3 weeks with an ectopic pregnancy. I was out at restaurants and pubs.

Likewise with my multiple miscarriages, I was off sick but I wasn't sitting in a dark room rocking.

We choose to go out for dinner, picnics, drinks.

No one in job knew why I was out, it was no one business.

Lots of people "reported" me to hr

Last year when I had some mental health issues around my mother dying and lots of things happen. My therapist told me to get out walking/hiking, be in nature

Again, complaints to HR and my manager

People need to wind their heads. You have no idea what is going on in anyone's lfe

Duchess379 · 20/08/2021 20:29

I've been medically retired due to chronic long term illnesses including arthritis & lupus. Some days I couldn't get out of bed. But my then boyfriend would take me out for lunch to cheer me up. Some people at work would get the hump but I have the right to eat! You really don't know the full situation & it's not fair to 2nd guess & make assumptions...

Geamhradh · 20/08/2021 20:30

I agree, OP.
But this is MN where people make damn sure they book their non emergency dental appointments on the 2 days a week they work, so what do you expect?
