Im desperately in need of ideas to entertain DCs (5 and 7) tomorrow. We’ve had a quiet summer holidays at home. DS tested positive for covid so we have been isolating as a family for 6 days now. We are in the middle of disastrous building work so the house is chaotic, no functioning kitchen, for cooking or crafts.

I am not feeling that great about everything and am finding it increasingly hard to occupy the DCs ( they are also finding it increasingly hard to be occupied) DS is high maintenance and wants an adult to play with all the time. DD is anxious about all the goings on and is flying off the handle at the slightest thing ...

Any suggestions for a exciting ( low input) activity? - We may have access to the garden, but it will depend if the builders appear tomorrow...

Baking??

greenlynx · 19/08/2021 22:41

Could you do sorting out old toys?

Danikm151 · 19/08/2021 22:42

Maybe a little circuit in the garden?
Treasure hunt- can you find the biggest leaf, pebble that looks like?
Picnic in the living room.
End the day making a pillow fort and watching a film together. Just to mix things up

Is your son ill as that will make it harder to entertain one whilst the other is laid up.

Can you have him in your bed and you and the other child make a pretend camp in the same room whilst the building work is going on. You could have a pretend safari with stuffed toys. Watch a jungle themed film etc

Hellocatshome · 19/08/2021 22:44

I would camp out upstairs if you have the builders in. Make forts and tents from sheets etc. Do you have nerf guns? You could run some nerf battles kids against Mum etc using your sheet tents as bases etc.

Thanks for these -@Galassia he’s fine, just full of beans and very very bored.

@forgottenforest I wish, but the kitchen situation makes it impossible

Do you have lego? There’s a 30 day Lego challenge thing if you google which will give you some ideas.
Board games
Put on a play
Scavenger hunt
Film afternoon

Pick a theme eg farms or space or fairies or whatever yours are into and do a day themed around it.
Eg space - watch a space show, draw some space pictures, make a Lego rocket, design an alien, etc

Oh god that sounds rough on all of you!

Could you make a den or put up a tent if you have one indoors?

Teddy bears picnic.

Sports day in the garden.

We threw a party when we were isolating - no reason just did it for something to do! Made banners with colouring pens, paper and string, baked a cake and some sandwiches/sausage rolls/pizza with music and put on some fancy clothes - I let mine choose my clothes which she thought was amazing then she did my hair and make up 🤣

Also, this may be controversial, but under the circumstances if sitting around in their pants playing/watching a screen keeps them amused for a few hours then give yourself a bit of breathing space!

Bug hunt?
Garden art
Water plants/plant bulbs (if someone could bring some)
Chalk drawings on patio/pavement
Hide some small toys in the garden and find them (like an Easter egg hunt)
Paper airplane races
Snail races (with real snails)
Simple food crafts (if you have the bits needed) like cereal necklaces - strawberry laces and Cheerios
Make some trail mix (cereal, dry fruit, chocolate chips)

Beamur · 19/08/2021 22:51

I love the garden party idea!

joe wicks challenge to tire them out - watch some JW workouts and then create a 'circuit' with 5 star jumps, 2 forward rolls etc. They can do the circuit repeatedly if possible.

then put on a puppet show for DH or for the builders - you can spend a long time deciding on the story / getting the soft toys ready to play different roles etc.

and at the end of the day, go for TV or a new game on a tablet for an hour.

In isolation we played card games like pontoon, snap and wist. We did a treasure hunt, made silly rhyming clues, they loved that. Played it, hide and seek and home. Much more screen time than usual too.. I found it really hard though.. but tried to do some thing a bit different and fun every day

DoucheCanoe · 19/08/2021 23:02

On a side note, did you have to let the builders know that DS has tested positive/you're isolating?

No judgement from me as I'm sure you know the logistics of your situation better than I do but I didn't think you were supposed to have workmen in during isolation period. Our carpet fitter had to postpone even though we hadn't actually moved in yet because we would have to be at the house to let them in!

Heathofhares · 19/08/2021 23:08

@DoucheCanoe yes the builders are aware. They will only be doing external work. But if they are here is dependent on materials coming into stock... and if they are outside we will have to stay in...

To be honest, lovely as all these suggestions are, I’m thinking that yours of screentime in our pants is the most likely senario...

Do you have a freezer? Order a few tubs of ice cream, various sauces, marshmallows, sprinkles, strawberries, bananas, wafers and squirty cream and let them make ice cream sundaes.
If the builders don’t come have a water fight in the garden or camp out by the paddling pool and pretend you’re on holiday. If they do, camp indoors in sheet tents with torches.
