My little one is due to start nursery in November. She has been approved for some funding
From the local council due to SEN needs. The nursery have confirmed how much funding will be available but I'm wondering if someone can explain how this works?
Obviously we are expecting to be paying for her nursery fees until April next year when she turns 3 and gets her free hours. But now I'm confused about this funding, does this mean we pay less or is that funding just additional money to the nursery?

Hi,
It is likely that the funding they are talking about is an Early Years Grant, or may be called something similar, paid to the nursery as perhaps a child might need a little bit of extra help or support. This could mean that the nursery will need to have another member of staff in, when your child is, as the ratios will be wrong if an adult has to spend more time with a child, rather than looking after a group. As nurseries don't usually have much spare money and they can't ask the parent to pay more than other parents just because a child may have SEN, councils are often asked to pay a grant to cover the costs of extra staff. This way, all children can be included in an early years setting. You will often still pay the fees and the grant is top up funding paid to the nursery.
I hope this helps.

Ah ok that makes much more sense thank you for explaining!
