What's happened to cheese

That lovely golden melted layer appears to be no more.

It now all melts like the pre grated stuff where u can still see the individual slices/grates when it's melted.

I usually only really eat cathedral city stuff as other I tried just smelt and tasted like feet. But now it's joined the realms of the unmeltable.

It can't just be me who's noticed ?

I can't say I've noticed...

It does seem more likely to fall apart when grating nowadays though I've found.

Don't really have a local deli place.

Only the ones inside the supermarket.

saw this video recently which shows how to make "perfect" cheese on toast and the type of cheese to pick. says mature cheddar doesnt melt the same

I'm having a Davidstow mature cheddar toastie for lunch and can confirm this is very nice melty cheese.

banisher · 19/08/2021 13:48

I've noticed it falling apart more when grating too. I still like it more than other cheeses. I think I have very common taste buds Grin

Since there are so many cheese experts here, can I ask, is there any cheese that's best in terms of nutrition?

GurtBusty · 19/08/2021 13:49

I used to always buy Cathedral cheddar - thought it was pretty good for a mass produced product. However, I think the taste and texture changed for the worse about 18 months ago. I now use ALDI own brand Mature Cheddar (and sometimes Extra Mature) - very good for a cheap product. Can confirm that it melts fine.

AdaColeman · 19/08/2021 13:56

Try Gruyère or Provolone for delicious melting cheeses.

Whatwouldscullydo · 19/08/2021 13:56

Ha ha gurt yeah that's y I bought it because out of all the supermarket mass produced stuff it was the best.

I hate nothing more than unwrapping a slightly damp/sweaty cheese that smells of feet. Having been through most supermarket cheddars it was definitely the mildest one I could find that also had a bit of flavour although I actually prefer the plastic tasting cheese Blush

But have definitely found it erratic in its taste and texture the past year or so. I wondered if it was across the board as I didn't want to waste time and money going to multiple supermarkets if it was basically all the same now.

Sounds like the safest bet would be going fir red Leicester. Have tried the lidl cheese and can confirm that I can only tolerate it on a baked potato if I mix it in and only if grated on the smallest setting. Cheese always tastes better grated anyway but sometimes I can't be arsed so need a cheese I can slice without falling a part and is edible that way BlushGrin

I shall gran some on the way to work later and see how it toasts over the weekend

OP…it sounds like you don’t even really like cheese Confused

Bobmonkfish · 19/08/2021 13:58

What about the Waitrose one? Strength 6 was my Dad's favourite cheddar, and he was something of a connoisseur...

Bobmonkfish · 19/08/2021 13:59

They do mild ones too OP.

Ha yeah I'm.really funny with fairy products in general really. Hate milk. Don't like butter I only buy it cos the only margarine I ever like changed recipe and went shit. I dont eat cheese like MNetters do. No posh cheese tasting evenings for me. No baked camembert . Blue cheese dressing is definate no go. I only realky eat in in cooking/toasties/ cheese on toast.

I think its cis my parents used to buy this weird cheese that tasted like the after taste when u have been sick when I was a kid. I didn't eat ir fir years.

Although I do like Mexicana cheese

Fair enough OP.

I’m a complete cheese fiend and love so many different kinds (lots of ‘posh’ ones but…

Can’t beat a burger with the processed plastic cheese that comes in cellophane sometimes 😂 I love Mexicana cheese too. And the smoky German one that looks like a sausage Grin

JasmineTeacup · 19/08/2021 14:43

I've noticed that cheddar is much more crumbly than it used to be. I wonder if it's because it's chilled too much these days? Frozen cheese is always very crumbly, so maybe the colder temperatures it's stored in now makes it that way?

EatSprayGlove · 19/08/2021 14:47

I've had the opposite @JasmineTeacup and been moaning about my extra mature not being crumbly enough! Have had the same couple of varieties over the past few yrs and they're getting more rubbery!
