Does anyone else always manage to get sick before planned events?

Been the story of my life!

Always fall poorly at Xmas (have done for as long as I can remember)last year I had covid!!

Wedding, a cold and temp

Birthdays I often have a cold and a temp.

On Saturday we are having a long awaited party, celebrate my 40th which I had in lockdown, my husbands 40th and a house warming.

On friday I have to attend a pretty serious court hearing for work, and am the main witness so cant even get someone to cover. Also have a much loved colleagues leaving do in London.

And what do I bloody have, another cold! Mostly have a bit of a temp, and feel extremely tired. Started on saturday when I had a bit of a scratchy throat, now it's just that bleugh feeling.

Covid test negative thankfully.

Paracetamol makes me feel okay, and I have been working from home ok. But the tiredness is no fun and just that general weak feeling.

Because I feel unwell I have a bit of a gippy stomach, my stomach is super sensitive and always reacts if I'm under the weather. If I dont sleep well I get a bad stomach, it's crazy sensitive.

Why, oh why does this always happen??.

Also, any bright suggestions on how to get this to bugger off before friday? I'm using that first defence spray thing to no avail.

I get a bad cold every Christmas. I think basically my body won't let me get sick until I know I've finished everything I have to do. Family birthdays, finishing up work, Christmas decorating and shopping. All in December. Then my body just goes phew I can relax. And then boom. I'm sick. Every damn year

ABitOfAShitShow · 18/08/2021 20:29

It’s work trips for me. Obviously hasn’t been a problem for a while but you can guarantee I’ll be flying with flu or a cold, perhaps some nausea. I also get sick on it after holidays regularly. Shingles on the way back from Verona was a particularly spicy one (I didn’t know that’s what I had before anyone starts). Grin

Watto1 · 18/08/2021 20:35

I’m always ill between Christmas and New Year. Every sodding year. I had a migraine on my wedding day. And why does my period always show up when I’m on holiday?

Itstheprinciple · 18/08/2021 20:45

It's a stress reaction I think to force us to slow down a bit.

carlywurly · 18/08/2021 20:55

I used to have a really stressful but well paid job and to offset that we went on some amazing holidays. I have literally been ill all over the world. It used to happen on every bloody holiday - usually a sickness bug or crippling headaches.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 18/08/2021 21:35

Migraines quite often. I thik its excitement.

Goshitstricky · 18/08/2021 21:41

DH is like this! It's infuriating (not that I'd tell him that because it's not his fault but still...) I put it down to him working so hard in a high stress job so when he can let loose his body is exhausted and any lurking bug or virus swarms. It's bloody miserable at times though.

thefirstmrsrochester · 18/08/2021 21:42

I always get sick at Christmas, every bloody year. Flu, swine flu, norovirus, chest infection, proper floored for a week minimum each year. The rest of the year I am in top notch perfect health.

Dizzy1234 · 18/08/2021 21:45

Yep, going abroad next week and I've been ill all this week, same when I host Christmas, anything out of the norm and I'm ill usually with a migraine.
My gp said migraine sufferers don't like change which made sense to me.

GrumpySausage · 18/08/2021 21:52

Yesssss! My dm always said as a child I'd only get ill at Christmas and my birthday. Same now I always feel under the weather when a big event is coming up. Nor just Christmas though anymore. A big holiday, a concert I've waited ages for. I think I get stressed planning for it and my body goes into panic mode.

Therehavetobeadjustments · 18/08/2021 22:00

Migraines and excitement/stress definitely

This happens to me too. Migraines on my birthday, nights out, nice dinners out with my husband. Even if I'm excited to go on a shopping trip. Always end up getting a migraine as well

BritInAus · 19/08/2021 00:46

Yes - definitely migraines! Awful and so badly timed!

Newestname001 · 19/08/2021 04:24

Oh my word! I thought it was just me!

Almost every time I had a big work event (which I'd usually organised so generally had to be there - except when I was whisked into hospital, so was up late the night before and at 5am next morning to send loads of briefing notes, presentations etc so I could "enjoy" being ill in peace...).

Funny how I don't get these incidents half as much now I don't have a busy, stressful job, commuting, etc to worry about. 🌹

TwoShades1 · 19/08/2021 04:33

Did I somehow write this post without realising! Even the stomach issues are like me, get nad nausea with even the slightest cold. Hardly any of my birthdays I haven’t been sick. Often ok for xmas but was sick last year.

My DH too. He only "allows" himself to get ill during the summer holidays. He is ill now in fact [sigh].
BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 19/08/2021 04:49

I'm MAGNIFICENTLY skilled at this. I can read "norovirus" in a magazine and suddenly I'm dying of it.

My 7yo is almost never ill, he's the least sicky child I know. Insultingly robust. However, give him my bed in a foreign hotel room, and I can guarantee he'll throw up all over it within 15 minutes of arrival.

Velcropaws · 19/08/2021 04:51

See you are looking for suggestions to counter this op. Maybe a full body/life overhaul:

  • how is your quality of sleep? Would a new mattress and pillows or black out curtains help?
  • how is your diet? Lots of fresh veg? Do you eat seasonally? Plenty of variety so you have good stomach bacteria? Too much processed food? Too much caffeine? Do you know if you are deficient in iron, Vit D or B12? Maybe take a zinc tablet?
  • do you exercise? (That can help with sleep.)
  • how are your stress levels? Could you meditate for 10 mins a day or focus on some sort of de-stressing behaviour? Do you need more down time?

Doubt if this will work in time for Friday but perhaps if you take a 12 week period and work on the above and write down how you feel before and after? Hope you feel better soon.

SpnBaby1967 · 19/08/2021 21:04

@Velcropaws

Sleep is typically pretty rubbish as I'm an insomniac at the best of times. In fact, the day I came down unwell I'd only slept a little under 2 hours. So you're right there that it doesnt help. Recently bought all new bedding, bed, mattress etc.

Diet isnt shocking but could be better. I have too much sugar in my diet I think. Not loads, but maybe more than my body likes.

I do exercise, I'm a karate instructor alongside my day job so off out teaching 3 or 4 times a week in the evenings and weekends.

My job by its nature is stressful, I wish I could meditate but my brain wont shut up Grin I have tried before. I've only been back at work 2 weeks tomorrow after a week off on leave.

Well, it's now thursday and I still feel bleugh. It's weird, it's not like poorly poorly. More like fuzzy and tired.

I think like many on here it seems it's that time you feel there is lots on, my body kind of goes into a state of panic I think Smile

You sound really fit op! And busy! So maybe just try and focus on sleep? Maybe come off screens an hour before bed, and use an app to help you meditate? Or could you start doing yoga or tai chi or something similar? New mattress sounds like a good start!

Itstheprinciple · 20/08/2021 09:38

It's a common thing for teachers/school staff. DH and I now allow the first few days of the summer holiday to be given over to feeling crap so we don't make plans!

user1471517095 · 20/08/2021 09:42

I don't get ill, but me and my sister get what we call an "Occasion Spot" usually right at the side of our Lip - somewhere nice and obvious.

Yes! I have one sprouted in the middle of my chin!!

Anyway, court went well although has been adjourned. Trip to london was crazy fun, and we have our party tonight.

I'm thankfully feeling better, the temp finally broke yesterday afternoon, scratchy throat is gone. Stomach still a bit hit & miss but I'll cope.

Took a PCR through work before court just to be safe & was still negative so just a lovely cold.
