Working for a UK company abroad. Tax implications.

Not really sure where to put this so posting for traffic. For the next two years my job can be fully done at home. I´m originally from a different EU country and am exploring the possibility of living there for a year. I could just move and apply for a job there (I friend has already offered me a job). However, I love my current job and it is a stepping stone in my career I don´t really want to give up.

Has anyone done this in terms of retained a job in the UK but managed tax implications so that you are paying taxes to the other country. I would be going for a full year, hopefully around January 2022.

I feel like it may not be possible and if I want to make this move I will simply have to get a new job (I am a citizen of said country so no issue working there). I just want to explore if there is any chance retaining my current job. I work at a large university if that helps.

I think the company that you work for now would become liable for corporation tax in the country that you live in and would, therefore, not allow it.

Unlikely as the Uni would be liable for tax as well as you. We had people working abroad during Covid but they were asked to return to the UK as only 6 months was allowed. But you could ask if it’s possible they can only say no, you might find that there is something in place to allow it as they have staff working away due to Covid.

Thank you both. I had a feeling it would be unlikely but I wanted to explore options.

Ask HR if they would put you through an umbrella in your home country. What country is it? That way, you're paid by a third party, no corporation tax implications for the uni, but either they or more likely you will have to pay a monthly fee which can be fairly steep depending on who you go through.

TBH, as an employer, I would just be saying no - regardless of the employee.

Too many downside risks

@Fashionesta i know it’s been a while since you’ve posted this but was just wondering how did it go in the end? I am in a similar situation now, looking at moving abroad but keeping my UK job. Thanks
