How long would it take your 9 year old girl to run 1,100m?

DD's sports club is entering kids for a race which is 1,100m long. She's not sure if she wants to take part because she's worried she'll be last. How long would you expect a reasonably sporty girl (but novice runner) to take to run this distance? I'm assuming boys would be faster at this age as they split the groups.

About 5 minutes

HollowTalk · 17/08/2021 14:07

But the chance of anyone knowing a) exactly how far that is and b) how long it would take their child to do it is extremely slim. And you know how we have babies with PhDs on here? We also have the fastest runners in the universe, too.

rainbowandglitter · 17/08/2021 14:13

That's a random distance for a race (just over 1km) are you sure that's the distance?

I have an 11 yo ds so not really comparable but he does 1km in just over 4 minutes. He's not the fastest of runners though

I’d suggest you look up the times at any junior parkrun events to get a rough idea (the run is 2k so halve the results). Bear in mind the results are only split into under 10s and 11-14 years olds. My dd probably took about 6 minutes for a kilometre when she last did a parkrun and she was 7 at the time.

Madcats · 17/08/2021 14:23

Our local Junior Parkrun is 2km (measured tarmac and on a bit of a slope). Aged 9 DD was doing it in about 8:30-9:00 minutes.

I would have thought that some kids would run 1,100m in 41/2 minutes but many would be closer to 4 minutes. It really depends on how they pace themselves. It's a tricky distance.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 17/08/2021 14:26

10yo DD just did her first 2k junior park run in 11mins. I think she didn't pace it well as she's used to 5k park run, so maybe 10mins is a better bench mark?

Yes. It's in the email the sports club sent. It's a loop of the town centre 🤷‍♀️ The adults races are 5k and 10k. I'm not a runner (can you guess!) and haven't a clue! She would be in the U10 group.

I’d guess some much slower times - at school sports day they do laps around the field which are about 200m per lap, and some kids take a looong time to walk / stagger round it!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/08/2021 15:13

There will be kids that sprint off but be walking halfway, some jogging, and those who know how to pace themselves.

Fastest kids will probably be around the 4 minute mark... when I was young 800m in 3 minutes was good for 11 year olds. But there will be plenty taking over 10minutes.

SummerHouse · 17/08/2021 15:16

5-6 mins average.

Howmanysleepsnow · 17/08/2021 15:21

My daughter did it at 6 minutes at that age. I know because she was going to enter a similar race so tried a couple of practices. She didn’t enter in the end as it clashed with something else though so no idea if she’s average!

edwinbear · 17/08/2021 15:53

I'd say about 5 mins. DD is also 9 and does 2km ParkRun in between 9-10 mins. Can you take her out for a trial run beforehand?

OddestSock · 17/08/2021 15:58

I'm 40 and it would take me about 7 minutes. I run sloooooowly!

Whistlingformysupper · 13/07/2025 14:20

I'd slightly ignore the people quoting 8-9 mins for kids at Junior parkrun. No their kids won't be winning it with those times but they'll certainly be well among the faster runners and the kids running those times are the kids who are running it every week and either have parents helping them pace or have been doing it long enough they are good at pacing.

Loads of kids will set off sprinting confidently then start struggling after a few hundred metres and a time of between 11 and 13 minutes is much much more typical for novices at junior parkrun.
