What do you buy when you have the urge to shop?

If you fancy a new buy, or just to spend some money, what's your go to thing?

A fancy basket of food shopping from the supermarket? New workout gear? Beauty products?

Do you have a certain thing that you go to when you fancy treating yourself?

I'm not sure I have a certain thing. I like deals so can be swayed if I see something online that looks like a good deal. That I probably wouldn't have bought if it wasn't for the deal.

I always feel guilty spending money so I don't really get like this. But, I do love a trip to home bargains or b and m. We buy food that we can't get elsewhere, and I tend to get things like cleaning products as they're often cheaper there.

If I just want to spend money, I browse the reduced rails in primark or charity shops for clothes for the kids. Can't really justify spending for the sake of it but sometimes it's an itch that has to be scratched so might as well make it a sensible purchase

Usually stuff for crafting/watercolour painting. And YouTube will be my financial ruin. I watch tutorials and then have to have whatever lovely thing the presenter is using. It ends up in my Amazon cart. By accident of course.

It depends if I have the urge to shop and I have the budget or if I haven't.
In the second scenario, I normally buy some gadgets for the house (I keep a wish list on amazon of stuff that I would love to buy but can't justify the purchase! Normally small things like a fancy veg chopper or a new butter dish) or go food shopping for something new and exciting I haven't tried before. It normally works!
In my head, if it's to be eaten or to be used to produce better food, it doesn't count under the 'unnecessary purchase' budget!

Thethreecs · 18/08/2021 16:35

Definitely something for the house, I always love buying any type of homwwares. My latest thing is airfreshners, I'm trying out lots of different scents, from oil burners and candles etc, I did spot a thread here a while ago about a fabulous airfreshner that smelled like a beauty salon, I checked it out and it was something like 100 quid 😳😳 but fortunately or unfortunately I never bookmarked it so can't find which one it is. 😔😔

I try not buy things unnecessarily, so I'd limit things like new clothes as much as possible. When I do, I don't buy cheap clothes, I buy stuff that lasts. Our world is full of people's discarded crap that will be there forevermore and I want to limit how much I add to it.

So if I want to treat myself I'd try to go for media - like an e-book/ music/ movie - or something I will consume or use like food or art & craft materials, or even a meal out or experience.

It's impossible to have zero impact but important to think about it. Those Primark sale rail purchases are probably going to be in landfill in under a year.

Am I weird? I never get this feeling. It’s always the other way round. I want some books/stationery/furniture/treat snacks, so I need to spend some money to get them. Not “I want to spend money, so I should choose something to buy”.
Well I think this is a more healthy way to be really!

Having an urge just to spend money for pleasure without actually wanting anything is a symptom of our consumerist society. We learn that spending gives us a dopamine hit. It's worrying really.

Same here, I didn't really understand the OP.

Surely you decide you want or need something, do you buy it, if you have the money that is.

Are you saying OP that you get an urge to spend money and then you have to work out what to buy?

BOOKS. Jotters, Pens, Pencils. (I am a writer)
Charity shop clothes (always jeans /crunchy white shirt / soft sweater). New socks. Bath oil. Dark chocolate bar (never a box of chocs)
Sometimes a houseplant (I never buy myself flowers)

MrsLCSofLichfield · 18/08/2021 17:38

Books. All of the books.

I’ve never had the urge to spend money just for the sake of it. I’m quite happy to browse then not buy anything.

I also don’t get this feeling.

I do buy things if I need them but I rarely buy anything because I want to spend money.

I sometimes have grand schemes and then buy things which then don’t get used but that’s slightly different I think. Eg an ice cream maker etc.
