Who has right of way? (with picture!)

Picture attached - it's a crescent with a no through road that comes onto it (where car A is). There are no road markings.

No-one seems sure who has right if way. Anyone know?

A. How could B know A wasn't there?

Iamacatslave · 16/08/2021 18:06

A. B can obviously see A approaching?

SunbathingDragon · 16/08/2021 18:07

I agree it’s A.

MrsBullfinch · 16/08/2021 18:08

A

LubaLuca · 16/08/2021 18:08

A. B pulling out in front of them would be dangerous.

MrsBullfinch · 16/08/2021 18:09

Unless the road wher A is coming from is joining the road where B is and there's markings on the road.
From the diagram it looks like the markings would be where B is. So, then A would have right of way

Planty13 · 16/08/2021 18:10

A. B is daft and dangerous if they think they have right of way

museumum · 16/08/2021 18:11

If there’s really no markings and it’s a residential area then it’ll be one of those mutual consent type things where drivers are supposed to make eye contact and agree by mutual consent.

Agadorsparticus · 16/08/2021 18:11

A. They are already on the road, B is joining and does not have right of way.

NCnotmyusualone · 16/08/2021 18:14

So is B driving round the crescent, and A is joining it from a minor off road/dead end that has a couple of houses down? If so I’d say B has right of way. Your drawing doesn’t make the road lay out very clear.

DuckyMcDuck · 16/08/2021 18:20

What's interesting is that historically, there used to be road markings at Point A which gave B right of way. These weren't replaced or have worn away and so 'older' people think B have as A is actually joining the Crescent and 'newer' think it's A which causes problems as you can imagine!

Neighbourhood Watch man is contacting the Council for clarity.

A

DuckyMcDuck · 16/08/2021 18:22

@NCnotmyusualone - that's the issue, people driving around the Crescent think road A is joining them and people in Road A, think it's their road!

fuzzymoomin · 16/08/2021 18:31

Are the two approaches equal in width/size? If one is the wider/larger road it should have right of way. Just contact your local council and ask them to add some markings.

DuckyMcDuck · 16/08/2021 18:34

That's interesting, the Crescent road B, is much wider.

With no visible road markings that's a free for all!

More of you need to get in touch with the council!

A

Fiddliestofsticks · 16/08/2021 18:38

I would have said B has priority. Car A is on a side road with a dead end, and is joining onto the main road which B is driving round.

Fiddliestofsticks · 16/08/2021 18:39

Just because a road has a bend, it doesn't mean it isnt the main carriageway.

B is the main road and A is a side street with a dead end.

Hoppinggreen · 16/08/2021 18:42

A is already on the main road so they have right of way.
There is a similar junction near me but there used to be markings and a sign giving B right of way. The sign was removed so now nobody really knows

Fiddliestofsticks · 16/08/2021 18:47

@Hoppinggreen

How is A the main road? It is thinner than the rest of the carriageway and has a dead end. It's a side road stuck onto the wider carriageway, which B I'd already on. Main roads can have bends in them.

Hoppinggreen · 16/08/2021 18:50

Ok, whoever is on the main road then.
It’s a hand drawn sketch not a photo

aerosocks · 16/08/2021 18:53

Do the roads have names?
If so, and very minor road 'A Name' is joining onto slightly bigger road 'B name', then I would suggest that B has right of way.

ViaRia · 16/08/2021 18:56

According to the diagram and your description, I think B has right of way. If B is a crescent and A is a no-through road then it seems like A is the minor road joining the crescent. This is supported also by you saying that B is much wider (ie more ‘major’ than A).
