There’s a place called Trevor in Wales!

Just returned from a week in gorgeous Wales. On a trip to Llangollen we drove through a village called Trevor. The Trevors we know are older men and it made us smile. Given the tricky (to us English only speakers) pronunciation of alot of Welsh words, we were wondering if it is actually pronounced like the name Trevor or some other way. Does anyone know? It was a nice little memory from our hols and I’m curious!

You could try posting in Draignet, found under other stuff. It's new for Welsh Mumsnetters. Someone must be able to help you.

DMCWelshcakes · 16/08/2021 14:22

In Welsh it's spelled "Trefor" and is indeed pronounced the way you think it is. A single F is a V sound in Welsh.

It literally means big village.

If you'd had gone a little further afield, you might have found the place called Pant. That's my favourite place in Wales.

To prove that I don't only laugh at Welsh place names, here's my favourite map.

I've also been to Twatt in Orkney and Friendly and Wetwang in Yorkshire.

I live near Clive !

Also drive past Mold occasionally.

meanderingthrough · 16/08/2021 14:30

My favourite local journey would be to start out in Hope and end up at Loggerheads Smile

Oldtiredfedup · 16/08/2021 14:31

Yup - Trefor - lovely down that way.

Hellvelyn · 16/08/2021 14:33

That looks the sort of thing I’d enjoy @BarbaraofSeville. I have climbed Fan y Big (also in Wales) and enjoyed a chuckle then too! No offence intended to any Welsh mumsnetters. Your lovely language was all part of our holiday experience and we regularly heard locals chatting in Welsh.

There's at least one other Trefor/Trevor in Wales, because there's a place on the west coast with a pier, which isn't really anywhere near Llangollen so I assume is another one.

Oldtiredfedup · 16/08/2021 14:34

Nether Wallop had me snickering as I passed through it last month

MerylSqueak · 16/08/2021 14:34

My favourite local place name is Plwmp, pronounced Ploomp.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/08/2021 14:41

And as if by magic from the BBC just now man tours rude place names on moped.

aerosocks · 16/08/2021 14:46

To go with Pant, how about Shortstown?

tillytoodles1 · 16/08/2021 15:02

Lloc pronounced clock.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 16/08/2021 15:07

It's not pronounced clock except by people who get the Ll sound wrong and exchange it for cl instead.

To say Ll you put your tongue to the roof of your mouth then breathe out.

MrsDThomas · 16/08/2021 15:08

Lloc is not pronounced clock. Its LLOC.

Trevor is TrevOr, not TrevYR.

SerenYDraig · 16/08/2021 16:16

I live about fifteen minutes from Trevor! It’s technically still in Wrexham I think, despite being closer to Llangollen. It is pronounced exactly as you’d pronounce the mans name Trevor.

Did you not go down and visit the aqueduct? Lovely pub and cafe there as well.

Finfintytint · 16/08/2021 16:18

Trefor is next to Cefn ( Trevor and Kevin Grin)

thelastgoldeneagle · 16/08/2021 16:20

We were in Llangollen last week too! Drive past Trevor and had to stop and take a pic - one of DH's friends is called Trevor!

thelastgoldeneagle · 16/08/2021 16:20

The aqueduct was too terrifying to walk on.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 16/08/2021 16:21

My friends lives in Wales... in South Yorkshire.

Place names are wierd.

MotionActivatedDog · 16/08/2021 16:23

I (as well as half of the rest of County Down!) discovered a few weeks ago there is a place called Ballywatticock here in NI!

Chunkymenrock · 16/08/2021 16:26

I'd expect it to be pronounced in Wales as TREHvore, with a rolled 'r' and not TREvva like the name.

Chersfrozenface · 16/08/2021 16:28

Well, the origin of the given name Trevor is the surname Trevor, which came from the place name Trevor.

Same is true of Clive. Became popular as a given name after Robert Clive AKA Clive of India became famous. His family's name comes from the parish and village of Clive in Shropshire.

We drive through Pant every time we go back to England to visit DH's parents. Much mirth always ensues...
