Appendicitis?

My DS2(9) had been off since Wednesday last week. Intermittently complaining of stomach ache, no sick/diarrhoea or temp. I have swung between thinking it's where he was a bit worried to wondering if something more is up. If it was appendicitis would it have got a lot worse by now? I'm keeping an eye on him this morning and will see GP if needed but just wanted others thoughts. DH is very much it's fine camp and I'm the opposite usually.

Pain is mid area, moving slightly right. He has been very dramatic this week though about all sorts of aches etc so I'm just not sure.

My DD had appendicitis which came on very quickly. She ended up being sick (dark green). I googled and it said to put a thermometer on the inside on her legs, her right side was very high. Hopefully, your DS won't get to that stage, but if he does bypass GP and straight to A&E.

Hopefully, someone else can help more.

Thank you. It's the lack of any temperature that makes me think it's not anything to worry about. Keeping a very close eye on him.

DH was violently ill when he had appendicitis. Vomiting and severe pain. Fever too. He definitely didn't think he was OK as he was extremely poorly, but his appendix had burst and he had acute peritonitis so maybe not typical. If in doubt, get it checked out. No point in taking any risks.

I'd take him to A&E.
I had appendicitis and it was one of those cases when symptoms were misleading & not obvious.
but my mum was sure something wasn't right and took me to hospital anywy.
had she waited another day it could've been very serious, the surgeon said it was a few hours away from rapturing.

just take him now

Have you done this, OP?

"Tests and procedures used to diagnose appendicitis include: Physical exam to assess your pain. Your doctor may apply gentle pressure on the painful area. When the pressure is suddenly released, appendicitis pain will often feel worse, signaling that the adjacent peritoneum is inflamed."

DS19 had a grumbling appendix. He had acute appendicitis at 10 and was hospitalised. It wasn't removed because the imflammation markers went down and he was ok. But it flares up once in a blue moon. This is the test DH does to check. DH is a GP.
Your child's pain will kick in as you release your hand as opposed to when you're pressing down into the tummy. That's a sure sign.

has a grumbling appendix

Also, anorexia is a definitive sign of appendicitis, OP. If your DC is eating, the diagnosis of appendicitis becomes questionable.
At any rate, don't hesitate to go to A&E.

Thanks, I did press down and release as read that somewhere but he didn't seem like it was much worse on release. He hasn't eaten much at all, few bites here and there, he just doesn't want to.

I had pain centrally and under my ribs one day. I felt awful. Next day I was unable to do anything except lie curled up and it was painful to breathe. The pain had moved to the lower right quadrant of my abdomen. I had emergency surgery the next day and sepsis had kicked in.

Everyone will tell you something different. If it were my child, I'd go straight to A&E.

Ouchyhurt · 16/08/2021 12:16

Thanks, he doesn't seem ill enough if you see what I mean, he's up and down. Will see how it goes for a few hours and if he seems unwell again I'll take him in.

Phone 111 for advice. I at first thought I had wind then a couple of days later I thought it was a pulled muscle. I called 111 and they sent me to a&e which I thought was a complete over reaction. Turned out I had appendicitis and then developed peritonitis and was in hospital for 10 days. No harm in getting medical advice.

I would take him to A&E, symptoms aren't always obvious and you can be up and down. I was in hospital for 4 days before with appendicitis and it burst before they took it out. Even when it burst they still didn't think it was appendicitis because I wasn't showing the usual symptoms. It was only when they took me to theatre for a laparoscopy they realised.
