Talk to the staff, a face covering at reception will reduce your embarrassment in doing so.

DowntrainTrain · 16/08/2021 10:06

I second @Hopeisnotastrategy

If you think it’s going to cause problems, a flush, halfway through is a good idea!
Me and Dh spent a “lovely” Christmas morning flushing and chopping one of his ‘specials’ in a brimful toilet 😳

Cheeseandlobster · 16/08/2021 10:07

@goingtotown

Bathroom bin, fill it with hot water tip it in the pan from a high height.
This usually works
GoodnightGrandma · 16/08/2021 10:07

Put your hand down the loo and push the blockage over the U bend.

feb2022 · 16/08/2021 10:07

@Iimaginethiswillbefun what a shit start to your day!
... sorry couldn't help myself.
I'd deffo try EVERYTHING before going to reception.
You could tell them someone broke in and did it, or blame a ghost that could be an option?

Alondra · 16/08/2021 10:08

I'm amazed to some of the answers.....what the hell?

If you are in a hotel and your toilet is blocked, you call reception and say "my toilet is blocked". That's it. They will send someone to deal with the issue.

Geez

Yourstupidityexhaustsme · 16/08/2021 10:09

Either call or Get your hand down. Sometimes needs must!

FinallyHere · 16/08/2021 10:12

Of course, I would try flushing, maybe even a couple of times, but in the absence of a plunger or any other tools, I would definitely just call housekeeping.

This may be the time to pass them a reasonably generous cash tip.

Be glad it's a decent hotel who will have the resources to sort it for you.

Agree.

The hotel will have a heavy-duty suction plunger, which you don’t normally have access to in a hotel room unless you bring your own, and proper toilet clearer/cleaner if needed. They’d probably rather you let them handle it than risk damaging the toilet or making a mess with DIY techniques and equipment.

Let people do their jobs; they're competent professionals and there’s nothing shameful about it. Be polite, say thanks, and leave a big tip for housekeeping or maintenance if it makes you feel better.

starfishmummy · 16/08/2021 10:13

It might not be you. It could be due to a blockage elsewhere in the pipework.

Branleuse · 16/08/2021 10:17

Id call housekeeping. Toilets are supposed to be able to flush away poo. She hasnt tried to flush anything inappropriate. These hotels cost hundreds and trying to unblok their ancient plumbing is not part of the deal

Iimaginethiswillbefun · 16/08/2021 10:20

Ok it’s sorted it is a very very old hotel, I don’t know if that makes any difference.

I phoned housekeeping but by time I shuffled back they hadn’t been. Things had time to ‘settle’ I poured boiling water down there and used the end of the loo brush. Which to be clear I then covered in antibac gel from my bag. So the cleaning staff didn’t have to get any nasty germs from it.
It was actually paper rather than ‘waste’ and I think it was blocked up from before. So when man turned up with industrial size plunger I said it’s ok I sorted it my husband does this all the time at home and sent him on his way.

When I closed the door, ‘DH’ said well thanks a fucking bunch.

@PurBal

Am I the only one that would call housekeeping?
That's what I was wondering....I'd call for housekeeping and style it out! Grin (and by style it out I mean go for a long walk once housekeeping arrives).
couchparsnip · 16/08/2021 10:22

Hotels have ways of dealing with this sort of thing. Its much easier for them to do it than you struggling. It will probably take them 2 minutes tops.
Once you've had a go yourself and it's still clearly blocked then the only thing to do is call housekeeping rather than waste time trying to sort it.
If they don't want blocked loos then they should install ones with a proper flush!

couchparsnip · 16/08/2021 10:23

Cross posted. Glad it's sorted!

haggisaggis · 16/08/2021 10:26

This happened to us in a hotel in US. DH blocked it when we had been in the room barely 1 hour! He was too embarrassed to speak to the hotel until the next day - kept trying to get rid of it. Luckily we had a connecting room with dc so used theirs! However when he finally plucked up courage to mention it to the hotel it turns out it was a common problem - new regs in California re water levels in toilets were not always sufficient to clear blockages.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 16/08/2021 10:26
Grin blame the DH, now that was a great solution
Bellringer · 16/08/2021 10:26

Floradix is herbal alternative to iron

Mindymomo · 16/08/2021 10:30

Thanks for this, I’m laughing reading this.

If you are on iron tablets, I sympathise, they really do block you up. You could try taking magnesium tablets, these really help me go.

Walkaround · 16/08/2021 10:31

@Iimaginethiswillbefun - ooh, that’s seriously mean, blaming your dh! 😂

WetWeekends · 16/08/2021 10:33

@GoodnightGrandma

Put your hand down the loo and push the blockage over the U bend.
This is what DC’s Dad does when the DC block the toilet occasionally, he’s a plumber and always just uses his hand and has it cleared in 2 seconds.
JudgeJ · 16/08/2021 10:35

@PurBal

Am I the only one that would call housekeeping?
Exactly! I'm sure this isn't the first time it's happened. If you're travelling with a male, blame him!!
Fiddliestofsticks · 16/08/2021 10:37

For future problems, if its paper that's blocked the toilet then pour hot water and washing up liquid down it. And leave it. The paper will dissolve quickly and then you just flush.

JudgeJ · 16/08/2021 10:39

@Iimaginethiswillbefun

I’m taking iron tablets my stomach is in shreds. It took me half an hour to go!
They're lethal! When baby 1 was born, back in the day when iron tablets were a part of antenatal routine, I was ages after the birth before I could go. With baby 2 I never took them, in hospital I was given them and when I said I'd never taken them they were appalled. Only after a blood test, revealing excellent blood, did they accept my word.
