I am finally hiring a cleaner

I have ADHD/Autism (recently diagnosed) and for a long time honestly just thought I was a complete slob. Always struggled with cleaning on top of trying to actually keep a job and not fuck up at work and look after the kids.

I am biting the bullet and finally hiring a cleaner to take the pressure off. I have tried for almost 20 years to get my shit together and get on top of keeping my house clean and it just depresses me when I can't cope.

Problem is I have no idea what to expect! What is it like having a cleaner and does it make your life easier in the long run? How many days and hours will I need for an average sized 3 bed house?

I’m thinking of doing the same actually so will be interested to hear the answers. Only a 2 bed with me and my toddler but I’m about to become a student midwife so I’d rather spend my free time with my son rather than mopping, cleaning and dusting.

You won't look back good cleaners are worth their weight in gold

If the surfaces are clear a good cleaner can clean a home in two hours

Cleaner here!! I love a list!! Write down what you hope your cleaner to achieve for you!!
Clean windows?
Bathroom?
Kitchen?
Cleaned /vacuumed floors?
Ask if she does anything else...
Like ironing?
Washing pet bowls?
Empty dishwasher?
Ime whatever needs doing to assist in the functioning of your home!

It's the best choice you'll ever make, mine is worth her weight in gold!

I am interested in this too (I also have ADHD!)

We have a 2 bed and even when I get bursts of motivation and blitz as much as I can it never feels fully clean. I hate cleaning with a passion, but I sometimes think I could do with a tidier more than a cleaner because of the amount of clutter that ends up getting put down and left!

Sylvvie · 15/08/2021 12:58

I am so pleased to hear it's made a difference!

@30degreesandmeltinghere I had to fill in a list to send off to them so everything should be on there, with the exception of picking up stray rubbish and clutter but thought I could ask this when he or she comes over!

@MummytoCSJH this is my issue too. I have a big blitz but it never feels really clean. I am also so much better at keeping on top of things like clutter everywhere if it is clean to start with (and also have more motivation to cook a decent dinner, bake a cake, do stuff with the DC etc). I'll definitely come back and update after next week!

Ours starts this week! I'm starting with a deep clean then 2 hours a fortnight. I don't want the bedrooms done though we can sort them ourselves, I can't wait.

GetTaeFuck · 15/08/2021 13:01

ASD/ADHD here too.

My cleaner is amazing.

3 bed house, 3 hours per week, including changing all 4 beds.

She deep cleans the kitchen and bathroom, hoovers the whole house, and does other things as and when needed.

It means I only have to wipe surfaces, do laundry and keep tidy in between.

Life changing.

maisiedaisy64 · 15/08/2021 13:06

I’m also getting very close to finding myself one. I’m just no good at cleaning and when I do I feel like it’s not done right. Interesting to read other’s replies!

Toddlerteaplease · 15/08/2021 13:07

Make sure the house is tidy. They are there to clean, not tidy up after you. Having a cleaner is fab.

For me it was life changing. I will never be without now.

I hated cleaning and was no good at it, but living in a bit of a mess made me feel guilty and depressed.

Do it. You won't regret it!

Monkeytennis92 · 15/08/2021 13:13

I had one for a while but found it was pointless until I manage to get on top of the clutter. We have very limited storage and my DH and I are naturally untidy/messy people. No matter how hard I try to keep things clear there just seems to be stuff everywhere! It would roll round to the weekly clean and the cleaner would end up having to clean round stuff so it wasn't very effective to be honest. If you can keep on top of the clutter you'll love it!

Lonelylooloo · 15/08/2021 14:10

Our cleaners are fab they are a cleaning/house keeping small company who do all the many holiday rentals around here. We live in a pretty area.

They make the beds and take out the rubbish which is amazing but not sure every cleaner does that. We pay £17 per hour plus VAT and our 5 bed house takes approx 4 hours per week

I do get in a proper flap running around before they come collecting dirty laundry off the floor and personal waste though. Kids clutter is always all over!

Whatliesbeneath707 · 15/08/2021 14:11

I started by having a cleaner just once a month and she charged me a set price. I’ve recently had to change to a new cleaner & she charges by the hour, so I now have her twice a month for 2 hours at a time. It’s amazing! We have a 3 bed house & 3 of us live here. We do tidy up before she comes so that she can actually clean/dust/vacuum round but it is money well spent. It really does feel like you’ve got your shit together when they’ve been! I did do a big “Marie Kondo” declutter a few years ago to filter down any excess stuff in the house & I keep on top of it by doing regular charity shop runs.
I hope it works for you OP.
